We are talking about short stops turning double plays in the second baseman and now, we are going to deal with a ball that is hit up the middle that the short stop has to go to his left and make a play. We play a game late in season that is a great game, with our infielders where only the short stop can flip it with his glove. He cannot touch it with his hand. This is a great drill especially when midway through the season or late in the season when you want to have a little fun with the infielders, infielders love it is all you do is practice the flips with the glove. As I said, the kids love it and it is a great drill for them to understand what to do to flip and how to keep your momentum going through the bag when they flip it to the second baseman.
The other thing is when you get balls hit behind, a lot of times, short stops will go deep behind second base and they talk about how to flip and it almost always has to be a backhand flip to the second baseman covering the bag because your momentum is going away and the tough part for the kids is understanding how far their momentum is carrying them and they have got to flip almost backwards to get to the second baseman.
So we are going to throw Tanner some balls up in the middle and he is going to first flip with his glove and this takes a lot of practice and as I said, he likes to practice it a lot and then we are going to do another one with him. He is has got to flip with his backhand. Good, now we are going to go up the middle and Tanner is going to pick the ball and he is going to give a backhand flip to the second baseman covering. It is a little deeper, he picks it and he gives a backhand flip. Very nice.
