I am Steve Durano. Welcome to this episode of Body Performance. This episode is dedicated to Dave. He had three questions. His first question was “Steve, should I work out before or after dinner?” Well the answer is it does not really matter.
A lot of energy, a lot of blood, a lot of oxygen is dedicated toward digesting food. So, that is why a lot of times when you eat a big meal and you go out for a walk, or run, or take the fun stairs, you get out of breath, but you know something, it really does not matter. If you do not like working out on empty stomach, eat and then exercise a half an hour and hour later. If you do not like exercising a full stomach, exercise before. It does not really matter it is all to the individual. The trick is to get that work out in. That is the most important thing.
The second question was this, “In the morning, since I have not eaten all night. Should I eat and exercise, or again should I just exercise on an empty stomach?” Well, because you have not eaten for possibly 8, 10, or 12 hours your blood sugar is pretty low. Now, people would think that if they start exercising, they would burn lots of fat. That is not quite accurate. The trick is, you get low of sugar into your blood stream, whether it is cereal, oatmeal, a bagel and that sugar will help energize you and sugar and fat will then be burned side by side as you do your or exercises or your aerobics. So, in the morning again it is not critical, but the physiology says you should eat a little bit in the morning and then go exercise.
And, the final question was “Hey Steve, it is raining out. I cannot go in to the gym. What is the best cardio I could do at home?” That is the tough one, if you do not have treadmill or something at home, you got to be creative. Shadow boxing, aerobics, jumping rope and any type of the activity that uses the lower body as much as possible is good aerobics, but again, you know, it is hard to do it at home if you do not have access to equipment.
One day is not gonna kill you. Does some jumping rope, push ups, some shadow boxing any type of that activity, clean your house. Your mother tells you to vacuum, but again if you have to sort of do what you can do with what you have. So, I hope I answered your questions, Dave. I will talk to you later. I love you. Bye.
