This question came from a number of people; if I buy an HDTV set, do I need to buy a home theater? Well, technically, the answer is no, you don't. But if you really want to enjoy the full, broad wonderful experience of HDTV, I think sound is a very important part of it. So I would recommend yes, you should have some sort of a surround-sound system.
HDTV broadcast not just the stereo two-channel sound that you used to with regular television, but also transmit multichannel sound. In fact, if you have a Blu-ray Disc, you can actually have up to 7.1 channels of audio. That seven channels, where three in the front, left, right and center, plus two in the rear, and two side speakers, just like in the movie theaters, you'll get that wonderful sound and they are all encompassing sound.
Now, lot of people think that the rear speakers in the home theater are for effects. What it really does though is it increases the sound stage, is what they call technically, it makes the room feel much bigger, makes the sound not just come out the TV but does actually feel the presence in the center of the room.
So no, you do not need to know buy a home-theater system, but is it a good idea? Absolutely, I would highly recommend it. Hope this was helpful.
