This question came from a number of people, “If I buy an HD TV set, do I need to buy a home theater?”
Well technically the answer is “No, you don’t.” But if you really want to enjoy the full, broad, wonderful experience of HD TV, I think sound is a very important part of it, so I would recommend “Yes”, you should have some sort of a surround sound system.
HD TV broadcast not just the stereo, 2 channel sound that you’re used to with regular television, but also transmits multi-channel sound. In fact, if you have a Blu-Ray disc, you can actually have up to 7.1 channels of audio, that’s 7 channels, in other words, 3 in the front – left, right, and center – plus 2 in the rear, and 2 side speakers, just like in the movie theaters.
You’ll get that wonderful sound that is all encompassing sound. Now, a lot of people think that the rear speakers and a home theater are for effects. What it really does though is that it increases the sound stage, is what they call technically; it makes the room feel much bigger. Makes the sound not just come out the TV but just actually feel in the presence in the center of the room.
So, “No” you do not need to buy a home theater system but is it a good idea. Absolutely, I would highly recommend it.
