I think 10 or 15 years ago, they use to think that you shouldn't lift weights until you were 16 or 17 years old, until your growth plates were stopped and it was then bad for you. But, I think the latest research is, if you are using proper technique and getting good coaching, it's probably safe to start once you get into high school and some even believe you can probably start in seventh and eighth grade. As long as you use light weights, the coach that is teaching you how to do the lifts, is trained and certified and they are giving you the correct technique. So I think that's important.
I would think, if I had a son that played football and was get involved in weight training, I would have him started maybe 7th and 8th grade with light weights, proper technique, not trying to lift heavy weights, but going through the motions with light weights to get his body used to go in through the correct movements that he is going to have to do in high school and in college.
As a team, we lift weights -- obviously there are different phases to the weight training type program. I think there is a part of the weight training cycle that is in season which we will probably only lift three days a week. There is also a cycle to be post-season after the season is over, trying to get a little stronger and then there is also a cycle and weight training that is right before the season that you are trying to build your strength, keep your strength up to game time or in season shape, and then basically in season trying to maintain the weight, the strength that you put into your body. So I think it goes through phases.
You have got pre-season, building it up, in season, maintaining it and then post-season, building it up again. Again in season, we try to lift three days a week, obviously not right after a game or not right before game and there are smart times, when to lift and when not to lift, but if you follow that phase period and weight lift in pre-season, during the season and after the season, I think you can constantly get athlete strong and keep them strong through the season.
