Shalom! It is February 13 and a lot of guys are screaming around trying to find their girlfriends or wife presence for Valentines Day the question is, this is something that you should be doing.
So, if you got a wife that access websites you will see that they do not think so. They say it is called Saint Valentines Day to honor catholic priests and there is a long history about that.
All of the people say that it has pagan origins and they believe in cupids as the main symbol. If you go to my blog rabiireflects.blogspot.com for this day you will see a discussion about it.
They also say that it is very materialistic. It is about conspicuous consumption of jewelry. Jewelry stores make a lot of money and the flower store. It is about buying gifts. There is a certain matchmaking quality to it or having a date.
And it is not mainly a Jewish value. But I think the big problem is that it is a day to honor a couple of Christian Saints or a pagan origin. Now, what they say the Jewish have a day where celebrated matchmaking.
The 15 of Ave six days after and you can read about the origins of that at (foreign language) okay, so my question is this, we should not follow the ways of a outside world to the detriment of hurting Judaism.
Should we resist? Like some of the days like Halloween and some other communities about Halloween should we resist, and say no it is pagan it is goyish, it is not Jewish something we should not do.
Or, is it something that where can aculeate ourselves to the culture, forget the fact that it had Christian origin or Pagan origin and just use it as a time to enhance our romance with our spouses.
First of all, if you want to try that on your spouse or girlfriend, say I am not celebrating Valentines Day because it is Saint Valentines Day. You probably would not get too far and you got a big problem.
It is not like Christmas for the Jewish community where people who say yes obviously is totally involved with Christian Community, it is about the birth of their God the origin it is just simply a time now for forgetting about that origins and just celebrating the romance and the affection between people and friends.
It is something that would definitely can come to ourselves to as a time to think about our relationships and to enjoy them and if they are a little bit materialistic it is okay, well presents are presents and you want to give them out of love and enjoy them.
So, that is my opinion I believe that it is perfectly fine to celebrate Valentines Day in a reasonable way.
