Walt Zeltner: You learn to live with it and you don't realize it's as bad is it was until maybe you get periodic bladder infections and then all of a sudden you say, wait a minute, this is ridiculous. And so you decide to do something about it.
Dr. Dean Edell: Walt Zeltner is talking about Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH, most men know it as enlarged prostate.
Dr. Claus Roehrborn: Frequent urination, night time urination, difficulty of starting the stream.
Dr. Dean Edell: As the prostate gland becomes enlarged, the urethra, the tube through which urine is passed is squeezed.
Dr. Claus Roehrborn: So tight, the urine doesn't want to pass anymore.
Walt Zeltner: I think I have had this problem for several years, it just kind of be getting worse as time goes by.
Dr. Dean Edell: While drug therapy may put some men on the right course. In other cases, surgery may be necessary.
Dr. Paul Arnold: There is many different procedures out there to treat an enlarged prostate.
Dr. Dean Edell: Many turn to a procedures using photo-selective vaporization. An intense green light beam is fed via a wand through the urethra and into the prostate, and zaps it.
Dr. Paul Arnold: It vaporises the prostatic tissue. What that means is that it goes from tissue to air-bubbles.
Dr. Dean Edell: Because it is minimally invasive, it can be easier on the patient. A week after the procedure Walt was back on course.
Walt Zeltner: It will make it less of a concern being out away from facilities.
Dr. Dean Edell: I am Dr. Dean Edell.
