Shalom, this is Rabbi Jonathan Ginsburg of Ezra-Habonim, Niles Township Jewish Congregation. This video will show you how to light a Hanukkah menorah and also to learn some of the songs of Hanukkah. Before we go any further, I recommend that you go to our website www.ehnt.org and go to holidays and there you find the Hanukkah blessings and songs. In addition to the instruction that how to light menorah and lots of other important information, but print out those songs so you have the words in front of you or find them somewhere else applause for a second and then I will start singing the songs in order as we have them on the site. So let me show you now after you have comeback with your songs, how to light the menorah?
Here is a one menorah, what they all have in common is this a place for the Shamash and there is a place for the eight candles as you have read our site there, you heard my Hanukkah explanation, the first candles live here, the first night with the help of the Shamash which is up here and then the second light, you put in this one and you start lighting from this side to this side. That is the way that you do each night and then the next night, you put the third candle in and you would use the Shamash to light first this and this and this. Now, what are the blessings as you are lighting them? Again, you should help we have them in front of you and the first blessing is a special tone for it.
It is best to only use this tone for, it is best that you only use this and when you light Sheba candles, other festival candles used are different tones, this tone is [singing]. This means, blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us by His commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the lights of Hanukkah candles. Then the second blessing every night of Hanukkah is thinking god for making great miracles at this season [Singing]. And number three is the Shahanu, only recited the first night [Singing].
This songs in order as we have them on our website, song number one is ohanikku Hanukkah, ohanikku Hanukkah come light the menorah, let us have a party, we will all dance the hurrah, gather on the table, we will give you a treat, see we go to play with a lot gifts to eat. Now simply there are the dreidles, lot gifts are the potato pancake and while we are dancing the candles are burning well. One for each night, they shade us with light to remind us a days one or go, one for each night, they shade us with light to remind us a days one or go. By the way, the words may vary a little bit between what is on our website and what I am singing, just to give you a little variation. Also I highly recommend you to visit my video for Humhumintash and verses, Hanukkah lot keys, kind of a fun eight minute debate, I did against myself on the two delicacies of those festivals.
Also Hanukkah a real the true story about some of the facts in history of Hanukkah and you will find places. Song number two, we have here on the Selenshi is Malodsur that kind of the main classic favorite in English version is Rock of ages, let our song praise your saving power; you amid the raging foes, were our sheltering tower. Furious and goes like that Ma'oz tsur yeshu'ati lecha na'eh leshabeakh.Tikon beit tefilati vesham todah nezaveakh. Le'et tachin matbeakh mitsar hamnabeakh, 'az 'egmor beshir mizmor khanukat hamizbeakh. And that is the way the song goes there and follows the basic tone. Okay song number three there, it is a Hebrew for a dreidel, [singing] that mean savvy bone, spends, Hanukkah as a great holiday; it is a wonderful Jewish holiday, a great miracle happen there.
Number four is [singing], that is number four. Number five is a Debbie Freidman adaptation of the Pav torah sentence from shabanu Hanukkah after raia, [singing]. I know it, I forgot my dreidel, my dreidel is there, a few little kids on so let us put that in. I have a little dreidel, I made it out of clay, and when it is dry and ready, now dreidel I shall play, chorus is, oh dreidel dreidel dreidel, I made it out of clay oh dreidel dreidel dreidel, now dreidel I shall play and if you live in the northern climate, verse that is not on the song Vera, I have a little dreidel, I made it out of snow, I put it in the oven, where did it go.
The last song that I have there is the song from Peter Yaro, light one candle and it goes like this, light one candle for the maccabee children with thanks that their light did not die light one candle for the pain they endured when their right to exist was denied light one candle for the terrible sacrifice justice and freedom demand but light one candle for the wisdom to know when the peacemakers time is at hand, here is the chorus, do not let the light go out! It is lasted for so many years! Do not let the light go out! Let it shine through our love and our tears. And then there is a lot of other Hanukkah songs, I just tell you ones, not on our website but a very famous Hanukkah song, it is called me and my little. In English, it is who can retell the things that are fell us who can count them in every age are hero saves came to our eve.
At this time of year and days of your maccabee is the temple did restore. In to there are people as we dreamed through their faith and courage as redeemed. And the Hebrew is me and my little grow road, Israel our time [singing foreign] etc. I hope this helps your Hanukkah celebration, wish you all a very happy Hanukkah.
