Danielle: Hi, I'm Danielle from Massachusetts, I heard you can lose your sense of smell from the sinus infection, is that true? Paul Russell: Thank you Danielle, yes it is true although it will be more accurate to say that you can lose or reduce your sense of smell from a viral upper respiratory tract infection. It is estimated that 20 or 30% of people who lose some or all of their smell will lose it in this fashion. This is caused by a damage to the olfactory or small nerve, most will people will regain the smell within 6 months to a year although some people will never regain it.
