Lesson #5 Six Steps to Making Your Muscles Grow
Without getting too fancy, without getting to technical, today we want to address how do your muscles grow? Another way to ask us is, what is the purpose of going to the gym?
Essentially, what you are doing when you go to the gym is you are damaging your muscles. Your muscles are going to get smaller. The muscle does not get bigger until you go home and sleep, eat, and rest.
One of the fundamental principles I teach in my muscle building course is, you have to give your muscles a reason to grow. And you have to realize every time you go to gym and do something that your body has already experienced, it basically says, “We have already done this before.”
When you expose your muscles to something they have never experienced before, they will say, “Holy crap! What the heck did you just do to me? We better grow some new muscles to protect yourself, so that we will never ever experience a stress like that again.” So, how do we induce the stimulus? How do we spark our muscles into growing? I am going to give you a couple of tips.
Number one is, I get myself pumped up before I go to the gym. On my drive to the gym, I listen to my favorite music, stuff that just get me freaking sight up.
Number two is, I always walk right path the front desk. I do not look at the cute receptionist. I go right into the gym. Jump on the treadmill, start warming up and getting my game faced on.
Number three is, I never enter the gym floor until I am sweating. I always enter the gym floor with a warm sweat. So mentally, it just gets me into a frame set, I am at the gym, it is time to work.
Number four is, I always wear my iPod. I find that the iPod helps me from getting distracted and tells others people, “Keep your distance. I am working out. I am not looking to get interrupted.”
The next thing is that when a work out starts, I do every single set like it is the only set in the workout. I do not think I should have got these minimal sets today. I better pace myself. It is an all-out set. Do every single rep like your life depends on it. And I swear, I mean every single rep even on the last rep when you think you got to put the reps down. You struggle as if your life depends on it.
The next one is, I always wear a stopwatch. I put the stopwatch on to keep the workout honest. If the 60 second recovery turns into a 90 second or two-minute recovery. I lost the entire effect of the workout. Those are some of the tips I use to make my muscles grow and some of the things that I think you should start doing today when you start hitting the gym.
