I live in Poland where manual transmission cars are still very popular. What the lady is saying in this video is exactly the opposite of what I was taught at my driving school. In fact where I live you could actually fail your driving test for driving in neutral gear -- it is considered dangerous for many reasons, one of them being that you will not be able to accelerate quickly enough if such need arises (e.g. to avoid collision with another vehicle). Perhaps in the cars produced in the 70s and earlier downshifting may cause the gearbox or the engine to wear down faster, but if you drive a contemporary car it is perfectly fine to downshift whenever your want to slow down.

The title of the video is slowing down and downshifting, but she never actually teaches you how to match revs and downshift...thank you useless lady in ferrari

Too bad idea to move on neutral gear!!! It's very dangerous especially in witer.You can easilly lock your wheels and your car became uncontrolled. Always use downshifting. ABS wan't help you if your engine doesn't provide power to your wheels! Sorry for bad english...

Hi, I am Jumi of Capital Dream Cars. I have been showing you how to drive a manual transmission vehicle. Now, I am going to show you how to slow down and downshift. Downshifting is when you shift into a lower gear not a higher gear. It's actually unnecessary most of the time, because it causes extra stress on your engine and drive line. Instead, when slowing down, press on your clutch, pop your gear box into neutral, take your foot off the clutch and then close to a stop with your brake pedal. Coasting to stop in neutral adds more wear to your brake but it's a lot easier and less expensive to replace brake pads than it is to replace an engine or a transmission. Some situations when it's actually useful to downshift include: When coming to stop on slick roads, when the extra control of downshifting helps with traction. Descending a steep road with the heavy large load when you shouldn't rely fully on your brakes. Descending a windy road when you may need to take quick evasive action. Now, that I have discussed slowing down and downshifting let's move on to how to handle turning corners, rolling stops and stop and go driving.
