Male Speaker: Most finishers will be made going upwind generally using the same line as a start. You want to figure out the favorite end of the finish line, you'll have to do this on the fly by observing the apparent wind and determine in, which end of the line is farther downwind. Well, we want to find the end for this upwind at the start to minimize the distance to the windward mark. When finishing upwind, we want to find the end for this downwind to minimize the distance from the leeward mark.
In plain English, find the end that is closest. If the wind is closest to the right side of the line, the left is favored and vice versa, that end of the line is your destination. Here is another way to think about it. Watch, just as the wind shifts left, the right end of the line comes within the grasp of our course. If the right or boat end of the line is favored, that means you'll be approaching on port tack. If you made a boat on starboard tack, fall off, gain some speed, past under their stern, then head backup, don't tack.
If the left end of the line is favored, you'll be approaching on starboard, approach it exactly as you would a windward mark. Your boat has finished the race when any part of it breaks the plain of the finish line. To give yourself a last minute booze against a close opponent, dive directly for the finish line when you're within a boat length or two. Simply turn straight to the finish line and let your momentum carry you to the line. How much momentum you carry will depend on your particular type of boat, so some experimenting is needed.
However this technique will let you beat out an opponent who intends to sail the whole way to the line close-hauled. I'd like to thank you for joining me. Remember this DVD should not be the end of your study of sailing. This should be enough to get you start at racing or racing faster for those if you already custom to the race course. Sailing is a wonderful sport; that will provide a lifetime of challenges and learning opportunities. So grab a boat, some water and some wind and get our there and race. And remember, keep clear air and sail fast.
