Small Business Solutions - Green Transportation
Ivy Hartman: Going green for entrepreneur Travis Mitchell meant buying a red scooter.
Travis Mitchell: The reason why I purchase this scooter is because it helps me because I drive around a lot.
Ivy Hartman: The scooter is better for the environment than the SUV Mitchell once used and it’s great for Mitchell’s pet care company’s bottom line too. Just over $5.00 will fill up the scooter tank and keep Mitchell’s business moving and growing.
Travis Mitchell: Now, I can drive two, sometimes 2 ½ days. Now I can’t do that with my other two vehicles. So it pays for itself in the first year I had it.
Ivy Hartman: A scooter is not being entered for every small business it’s looking to go green and save money on transportation. In fact many small and midsize businesses are using computer mapping to save fuel and money. And others are turning to Hybrid vehicles.
Jean Ponzi: Does your business lease a vehicle. Can you lease a Hybrid vehicle and what would it cost you to do that? Would it cut overtime the amount of gas that you use? If you have your magnetic or your painted logo on the side of a vehicle, make sure that’s as energy and fuel efficient a vehicle as you can get.
Ivy Hartman: Some businesses save energy, money and the environment by cooperating business vehicles.
Jean Ponzi: Is it possible to share a vehicle with any other businesses again? Teaming up and cooperating are hallmarks of implementing sustainability.
Ivy Hartman: Many small and midsize businesses are spending more time planning delivery and driving routes to cut fuel cost and time spent on the road. Keeping vehicles in good working order can also impact fuel economy. Offering incentives to employees who carpool or take public transportation to work could improve the bottom line as well. Making local purchasing a priority can save money and reduce pollution because you’re doing business when possible with other local enterprises. There are also some local and national taxes then for buying and using alternative fuel vehicles but not all of them will make sense for every enterprise.
