Alex Fees: I'm Alex Fees on Small Business Television. We are coming to you from Cleveland Ohio at the 2008 COSE Small Business Conference. COSE, that’s C-O-S-E, the Council of Smaller Enterprises, a group that yields to the experience of its membership. Christine Brown is with us. Christine, in addition to being with Marketing Resources and Results, now is that your company?
Christine Brown: That’s my company, I'm the owner.
Alex Fees: Your blog can be found in sbtv.com.
Christine Brown: That’s correct.
Alex Fees: What do you blog about?
Christine Brown: Branding and marketing, that’s what our company specializes in and I've actually been blogging on the internet for almost three years now about now branding and marketing. And I recently found out about SBTV and saw that you could have your own blog on there and I thought what a terrific thing because small and medium-size businesses really need information.
Alex Fees: Well, how has that work for you, blogging on sbtv.com?
Christine Brown: It’s great. I've been able to track traffic coming to my website as well as coming to my blog and I'm getting comments from people. It really causes community to happen right there on the internet. So, it’s far beyond regular television, it’s interactive.
We provide the marketing resources for small and medium-size businesses who often don’t have a marketing department and that allows them to get the sales results that they want. A lot of our clients are under 50 million in sales and it doesn’t allow them to have a vice president of marketing, a director, manager and all of those.
Alex Fees: Certainly that’s the case with many entrepreneurs.
Christine Brown: Exactly. We primarily focus in northeast Ohio simply because that’s where we are and there are a lot of contract manufacturer, service providers so primarily business to business. I come from a consumer goods background. I worked at many toy companies and home decorative accessories with a lot of branding experience and I find that big brand companies already have a marketing department, but a lot of the manufacturers and smaller businesses that’s not the first thing that they do. They get manufacturing going or services going.
Well, I just saw a huge need for need for it. As I worked in a large company here in Northeast Ohio fortune 500 company, the pink slips kept getting handed out and I was still responsible for getting all my work done with a department that kept shrinking and shrinking and I kept thinking to myself I wish there were somebody I can just hand these projects to and they get them done, they’d know how to do it and I wouldn’t have to worry about having them let go later on. So, I start to think and that’s a great idea for a company and sure enough, we’ve been so busy. It’s been 10 years now.
We find that many of our clients are really wanting to get to the next level. They will start out as entrepreneur and typically they do everything themselves from filling out the FedEx form and programming their computer to creating their business cards and that’s typically what start up has to do. But we work with companies that are ready to get to the next level.
Alex Fees: So, what kind of mistakes do you find that people generally make if they're trying this marketing on their own?
Christine Brown: Well they put all their eggs in one basket, that can be very dangerous if you have all your advertising dollars in the yellow pages let’s say, how many people search on Google now you know if you don’t have a website, if you don’t have search engine optimization, if you don’t have the brochures for an event like this and business cards that reflect what you do and putting all your eggs into one thing and think that’s how you're going to get your customers can be one mistake.
Another big mistake is they will fall in love with their product and service and just figure everyone else knows what it is and how to find them. And so they will have this huge warehouse of inventory and no customers.
Alex Fees: Christine where people can get more information about Marketing Resources and Results?
