Ivy: Hello, there. I’m Ivy Hartman and joining me is Jordan Colleta, the Vice President of E-commerce Marketing for the world’s largest small package delivery company UPS. Jordan manages a team of experts that helps gather technology tools to put to work for businesses. Jordan, welcome to SBTV.com.
Jordan: Thank you, Ivy.
Ivy: Let’s talk about what advice you have for a small business owners who are just starting to look for those shipping tools out there?
Jordan: Sure, that’s a real common need in question we get by Franklin. So I think place I would recommend the small businesses to start is to sit down with your carrier. Most carriers provide help and provide shipping solutions as well, so that I think a good place to start. And I think also you need to think about do I need something that’s really sophisticated or do I need something that’s basic and then typically. There’s like a dividing line that somewhat helps to find that in terms of volume levels per week.
Ivy: Perfect. So UPS offers a web based tool but they also offer other software technology tools depending on what your small business needs are. Let’s talk about the web based tool for small businesses.
Jordan: Sure, for instance if you’re small based costumer and you ship like 25 packages a week or less. Maybe there’s other consideration for just like a general guideline. That’s a good place to start for instance go toUPS.com. We have a shipping system called UPS internet ship.
It has very robust features for that shipment level 25 packages or less. And it helps you to do things like store your addresses so you can get back to them so you can ship. It helps you forget what you’re charges are across service levels so you need something there and immediately you know how much is going to cost, even get there in a couple of days. You can select the right service level. It also does things like it helps you come back to the shipment so you can track the shipment easy so all these things kind of neatly tucked in to the web.
Ivy: And more and more people are using web technology in their business when it comes to shipping their packages.
Jordan: Absolutely.
Ivy: Well, what about for somebody who wants to ship more than 25 packages you got another software technology for that, right?
Jordan: We do. We have what’s called WorldShip. Now that’s a system that gets loaded on a PC. It’s a Window’s based application. What’s interesting about WorldShip it’s really kind of addresses those more complex set of needs that someone has higher volume levels require. So an example for that might be, if you have all your ordered detail and a system somewhere in your small business and you really don’t want to physically have to re-key some of that thing even if you setup your first address book entry as an example.
Well WorldShip can be network to your internal system is very simply and then form that point forward being able to ship you could literally almost ship without having to key enter much at all.
Ivy: Perfect.
Jordan: Just press the button and your label is printing and you shipped your shipment.
Ivy: I mention it takes a little bit of time to get things up and running at first with WorldShip but once you got all that data in there it seems like it’s pretty good thing was.
Jordan: And I think that’s where that volume level really kind of comes in the play. We recognize the small businesses and they don’t even really a lot of time to spare and so it’s really that trade of how much time do I want to spend upfront to get things setup easily. And but then from that point forward it will pay the dividends so that’s kind of that nice balance.
Ivy: Let’s talk about how you easy is it to get these technology tools started?
Jordan: Sure. Well, you go to UPS.com or viewers of SBTV.com go to UPS.com, you can start on UPS internet shipping right away or you can download WorldShip. But one thing you will need to do is if you don’t already have one setup the UPS account number and again you can do right on UPS.com.
Ivy: Is there a cost for these services?
Jordan: There is not there. The solutions we provide is a value added to our costumers and you can get started right away.
Ivy: What about for those small business owners who don’t already use UPS. Is this some kind of applicable maybe for other shippers?
Jordan: Well, I think the theories are but the solutions of course that we provide are specific for UPS shipping. If you’re working with a major provider, and sit down with them, see what they have, see if they have some comparable things that you feel comfortable with. And they should be able to get you started and there are also third party experts that can help you with shipping solutions as well.
Ivy: Jordan Colleta, Vice President of E-commerce marketing from UPS joining us today, helping us out with some if those small business solutions, putting technology to work on your small business or in terms of your shipping needs. If you want more information, you can go to UPS.com.
