Ivy Hartman: Welcome to sbtv.com’s coverage of the NAWBO Conference 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia. I’m Ivy Hartman and with me is Judy Moses of Pathway Home Realty Group. Judy is also outside of owning her own private realty group, not a national franchise. You’re also the National President for the Women’s Council of Realtors.
Judy Moses: That’s correct.
Ivy Hartman: Talk about that organization and being President.
Judy Moses: It’s just a wonderful organization. We were founded in 1938 because at that time, women weren’t allowed to be members of the real estate board and there was no way to line about information and networking because it was pre multiple listing service so we’ve been advocates for women business owners for all those year and it’s the place for women in real estate entrepreneurial spirits to go to get the training and support they need to get to the next level on their business.
Ivy Hartman: So how have you, have you come in into any challenges with owning your own small business in a world of larger real estate companies or even in your direct area in Massachusetts. Maybe you’re encountering some of that competitiveness, how are you successful as an independent small business realtor.
Judy Moses: Well I think that in any business, there is competition.
Ivy Hartman: Yes.
Judy Moses: And I think it’s a good thing because it makes us all strive to be better and how I, my unique selling preposition is always about trying to raise the bar, see what else we can do to make the process seamless for our clients and we’re advocates during the sale and after, it’s a lifelong commitment to us. We, you’re a customer or a client for life.
Ivy Hartman: I like that building relationship.
Judy Moses: That is all about relationships.
Ivy Hartman: Talk about the initiatives that you’re passionate or vows especially with the council and girl scouting?
Judy Moses: Yeah.
Ivy Hartman: You’re also a civic person.
Judy Moses: I am just passionate about women’s, the growth of women and girls and the idea that we can stretch to boundaries, we didn’t think were possible. I was blessed to have a very good group of close friends growing up who always supported me. I then went to an all women’s college, Simmons College in Boston. Then fell into Women’s Council Realtors so I’ve always had this network of “wind beneath my wings”, support of women. Cheering me on when sometimes I didn’t think I could do something so that I could reach to the next step and for me to pay it forward is to go back to other women’s organization and for me it’s the big sister organization in girl scouts and mentor those who come after me.
Ivy Hartman: And as a business owner I think that you have a lot to offer, can you, give us any specific young women that maybe you’ve mentored and maybe a success story of what they’re doing now.
Judy Moses: Well I think that there are lots of people through Women’s Council of Realtors that I’ve touched sometimes, people that you don’t even realize. I met a congresswomen once and I have to apologize, I don’t remember her name but, she did say that we always have to be our beset because we don’t know what young women is watching us and try to keep that in mind because I will hear, maybe years later of people where I may be spoke in front of them and told them of a challenge I had in my business and I said, ‘just do it, you can do it’ and they’ll come a year later and say, ‘I opened to my own business because you told me I could do it.’ Stories like that so it’s kind of like, you can’t expect the instant gratification that comes later. You don’t even know the ripple effect of the good to do.
Ivy Hartman: Perfect. Thinking I’m paying it forward. Let’s talk about the NAWBO National Conference that we’re attending, what are some of the sessions you attended and what have you growing from those?
Judy Moses: Well I started with, the first session I went to was a session on seniors and marketing to the senior market because it’s a very large market and it’s funny because I had just done some studying on real estate sales to seniors. It was fabulous. It talked about communicating in different ways to different generations. I’ve also went to a financial session that included in that, that hey, if you’re not delivering value during a business, you don’t have financials to worry about. You’ve got to have that income coming in. I went to a branding session, they’ve all been fabulous and it’s all about networking and learning from each other.
Ivy Hartman: Wonderful. Thank you for being with us, Judy.
Judy Moses: Oh, it’s been a treat and I’ve especially light the awards. Seeing the people that have been successful in business and it’s funny, the people that you see that receive these awards, their success goes beyond their business and then to their community because that’s what is all about; impacting and changing the whole world for the better.
Ivy Hartman: And you talk about this being a starting point for some of these young women, you know.
Judy Moses: Absolutely.
Ivy Hartman: Especially, you mean the specific correlations to cool calling. You know or making, you know, we always have, there’s always some kind of fear.
Judy Moses: A big fear.
Ivy Hartman: Oh I’m going to a fear of failing.
Judy Moses: Big fear.
Ivy Hartman: Or as a business owner or as an employee of your so what advice do you have for those women?
Judy Moses: Well I try to walk in through their fears and I think that often times we don’t even know what it is we’re afraid of but I’ve recognized things that I’ve done and if it works for me, I like to share it with them. For cool calling, it’s always, know what you’re going to say before you’re going on the phone and usually it’s about giving information, not looking for business because people would be happy to hear from you if you’re giving value first and then you ask. You give first and then you ask what they can do for you.
Ivy Hartman: Wonderful advice. Judy Moses with Pathway Home Realty Group and you’re in serving, your Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
Judy Moses: Yeah in Rhode Island.
Ivy Hartman: Aha.
Judy Moses: I have a home in Rhode Island near the sea.
Ivy Hartman: So we’re, being here at the national NAWBO Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. We’re meeting women from all over the country who are business owners. Keep it right here on sbtv.com as we continue our coverage because small business is our only business.
