Ivy: Well, we’re here at NABO 2008 in Phoenix, Arizona and joining is Cheryl Fleet of Canyon Calling Adventures for Women. Wow!
Talk about Canyon Calling Adventures for Women, Cheryl, what made you start it and what is this?
Cheryl: Sure, I started this business when I was driving jeep, Sedona and they’re all CoEd trips, even and again out of the blue you would get just six women on a jeep. And when that happened that was startingly different experience, and I suddenly got to think, “Gosh, there’s something special about women traveling together,” but then I knew that, didn’t I, because I’ve done lots of travel with women, and there’s no two ways about a women, do travel differently. And I think when you get a group of women together, no matter whether you’re traveling or just in a book, it’s a very special experience. And so, you know, we can control most aspects of our lives, let’s try and go on trips together.
Ivy: So we do talk about the excursions or trips that your business provides?
Cheryl: What we do is something a little different to what anyone else in industry offers and that is a multi activity trips. So one day we’ll be on a horse for a couple of hours and then we’ll travel to somewhere fabulous, the next day we’ll be hiking a glazier and the next day we’ll be white water rafting and the next day sea kayaking. So you get about five to six different activities in one week long trip.
Ivy: It sounds like I need to do some physical fitness training before I go on one of your trips?
Cheryl: Not at all. No one should have ever have to go to the gym to go on vacation. I mean look at these girls here, do any of them look like marathon runners?
Ivy: It’s pretty normal.
Cheryl: Exactly. So we just want to enjoy the outdoors without anybody saying, “Hold the paddle this way or come on, we’re going to get there in two hours.” You know, women like the journey and that’s what we d differently from guys.
Ivy: I love that. Talk about—well, here in Phoenix, Arizona, your based out of so Sedona, so what are some of goals as an exhibiter here at the NABO Conference?
Cheryl: Well this is women at their good at stepping away from their lives, that if only they realize how much more they gain from taking a week away, they gain such insight being out on another nature, being just on the company of women versus all the responsibilities they have. It’s so good to take a breath and I’m trying to get that initiative across this week.
Ivy: We’re here at a resort and spa I might add. It is for some women but is—are there excursions for anyone is there certain, somebody’s, you know, payload just for somebody who really likes outdoors?
Cheryl: None, moderately fit women is what we examine. If you’re more that 30 or 40 pounds or you’re underweight, it can become a bit challenging but this can need time to do everything and women as so inherently supportive with so group oriented, that if anyone is trying, then just naturally slow down and go at the pace of the slowest person. And everyone gets here in the end, we all have a great time.
Ivy: Okay, what are some of the things that women say after they’ve experienced one of your excursions?
Cheryl: I think the confidence level is amazing. I climb the whatever mountain, I can do anything. You know, it’s like they take what they learned on the trip and back incorporate it into their lives. And the kids and their sisters and their aunts and their mothers are all equally empowered by their experiences, which I love. It goes out into the community.
Ivy: One of our speakers today, Nelly Gallon talks about how she makes it a point to do something new or for herself every year and something for here business. This seems like a good marriage of both. So you could conquer the outdoors and take it back in your leadership role your business.
Nelly: That’s right!
Ivy: Wonderful show. Thanks for being with us here on sbtv.com. Stay as we continue our coverage of NABO 2008 here in Phoenix, Arizona at Biltmore Hotel.
