Ivy Hartman: Welcome to Phoenix Arizona at sbtv.com’s coverage of the 2008 NAWBO women’s business conference. I'm Ivy Hartman and with me is Cassy Saba who is a young entrepreneur and the winner and one of the finalists of the Guardian Girls Going Places Award. Cassy is Cassy’s Sassy Jewelry.
Cassy Saba: You got it right.
Ivy Hartman: Well, you're wearing some sassy jewelries, I can imagine you made it.
Cassy Saba: I did.
Ivy Hartman: Talk about your business Cassy.
Cassy Saba: I started about six years with little bead kits. I got one from my tenth birthday and I started making little bracelet, started to love it. My mom would wear piece to work and get a compliment and I knew that I can turn my hobby into a business and kind of took off from there.
Ivy Hartman: How old are you?
Cassy Saba: I'm 17 now.
Ivy Hartman: Okay. Now, do you think you this being a career that you pursue a long term?
Cassy Saba: I hope so. I think so.
Ivy Hartman: You think so? Tell us about the Girls Going Places Award, what it is and how you got it.
Cassy Saba: I was the last year winner and I found it on the stars of website and I thought it was perfect for me. You can apply if you're a young entrepreneur and if you have your own business. I help too. If you have the spirit and everything like that. So, I applied and the women have been nothing but constantly supportive and everything and it’s just such a great program.
Ivy Hartman: Now, with the award money that you’ve won what did you do with that?
Cassy Saba: I put it towards my education. I’ll be attending the ASU in the fall.
Ivy Hartman: What are you going to study at ASU?
Cassy Saba: Marketing.
Ivy Hartman: What facet of running of running a business has been the most challenging for you?
Cassy Saba: I have to say my age being battling it with school and being able to manage my time and stuff like it’s hard. I always wanted to do my do my business stuff first but—
Ivy Hartman: Over school stuff?
Cassy Saba: Yeah.
Ivy Hartman: Not to mention the social life. Welcome to real life. You would be happy for the rest of your life that work balance, life balance school those kinds of things going on. Talk about some of your favorite piece of jewelry and why you call it Cassy Sassy Jewelry.
Cassy Saba: I probably call it Cassy Sassy Jewelry because it’s easy to remember and I'm a sassy girl and my jewelry is sassy and chunky and everything is in any kind and fun. This is actually one of my favorite pieces. It’s sleeping beauty turquoise and crystals. One of my other favorites I designed for Beyonce and it’s almost as big as this but it’s bright yellow and it’s a huge crystal necklace and—
Ivy Hartman: Beyonce?
Cassy Saba: Yes.
Ivy Hartman: What do your friends say when you tell them you design jewelry for Beyonce?
Cassy Saba: They are super encouraging.
Ivy Hartman: How did that happen?
Cassy Saba: We were actually living daily together which is a trade magazine for the fashion industry. Her mom and her run the page before me talking about their clothing line called House of Dereon and I always wanted to give a necklace to Beyonce so I wrote a letter to the mom and took off from there.
Ivy Hartman: How did you originally get to appear in the magazine?
Cassy Saba: I'm still little marketer. I call different editors and they were interested.
Ivy Hartman: Do you think your age plays a part in the story line there?
Cassy Saba: Absolutely yeah definitely.
Ivy Hartman: Speaking of that, you're going to be appearing on national television pretty soon. Tell us about that.
Cassy Saba: July 9th, I’ll be on the Montel Williams Show, that was a fun experience. I love it, it was me and three other entrepreneurs and so we talked about our businesses.
Ivy Hartman: All young entrepreneurs at age 18 or younger?
Cassy Saba: Yes, they were actually.
Ivy Hartman: Catherine Cook is the CEO of myyearbook.com was on there. Another kid is a film producer and it was just a great experience.
Cassy Saba: Usually, we think of young entrepreneurs are kids doing things in the IT industry. It’s great to see you doing something in arts and fashion.
Ivy Hartman: Oh yeah, thank you.
Cassy Saba: You're welcome you're putting a heart to work. Anything else we should know about you or Cassy’s Sassy Jewelry.
