Alex: I’m Alex Fees on SBTV.com. We’re coming to you from Denver, Colorado from a conference conducted by Michael Gerber titled “Exploring the EMyth”. Michael Gerber, small business guru that is. And joining me here now is Nigel Clayton. Mr. Clayton has three businesses. We are here to talk about “Getting to High Streets” and he operates out of Lakewood, Colorado. Now Nigel, let’s set the tone by going to a couple of quotes from Michael Gerber from this morning’s session. He says, “The extraordinary thing about this is you don’t have to know anything. You simply have to be interested in finding out.” Gerber maintains that selling is a system. Another quote, “The differences between you and me, between him and us is that he never stops looking for himself.” Nigel, what do you think about that? Has that been your experience on entrepreneur?
Nigel: Absolutely. That’s exactly what I do in my business. My background is that I’m a CPA. I’ve been a CPA over 30 years, that’s one of my businesses. Getting to High Street is a business coaching. I also have an entrepreneurial training company. Throughout the 30 years of business, what I found out was no matter how much systems, how good the people were in place, businesses still fail. It wasn’t until I learned myself and helped my clients understand that finding what the passion within was is what makes us successful.
Alex: Okay. So your three companies are getting to high street, what of the other two?
Nigel Entrepreneur Business Owner Society or EBOS and Clayton and Associates.
Alex: Clayton Associates, is that a consulting firm?
Nigel It’s a CPA firm.
Alex: Out of Lakewood, Colorado. You’re a CPA by trade, when did this entrepreneurial bend raise this ahead in you?
Nigel When I finally realized that I wasn’t living up to my potential being a CPA and that I wasn’t really a technician, I was a big picture person.
Alex: This sounds very consistent with what Michael Gerber is talking about. Have you been to one of Gerber’s conferences before?
Nigel Yeah. I took classes from him years ago.
Alex: Really? Back in the early days.
Nigel Back in the early days when it was all about systems, systems, systems.
Alex: What’s your impression? He maintains that business is a system, selling is a system.
Nigel In my getting to high street business, I go through four steps; Vision, comfort zones, time and systems, and they’re usually in that order. But first is the vision and that’s getting the passion outside, something I tell my clients is. About a year ago, my mother sent me my third grade report card. In my report card, it said, “Nigel would do even better if he wasn’t so busy helping others.”
Alex: Really?
Nigel My question to people is, who told me to help others? It wasn’t my teachers because I got in trouble for it. I got a C in conduct, everybody got an A. There was something that was already there and that’s what Michael Gerber is talking about. There’s something that’s already there from the beginning.
Alex: Which was taunting you to help other people.
Nigel Yep.
Alex: And you built upon that?
Nigel Yep.
Alex: I mean, not just for one business but three. Nigel Clayton, what does the future hold in store for you?
Nigel Well the EBOS business is just about to launch in September.
Alex: Tell me what EBOS is again.
Nigel It’s an entrepreneurial training company.
Alex: Okay. What does it stand for?
Nigel Entrepreneur Business Owner Society.
Alex: So what about the future of EBOS?
Nigel We’re starting it out helping people. There are three things we saw that needed to be addressed. One was that the people are training here, there and all over the place, but how do they know if they had all the training that they needed. So we have a comprehensive program that helps them assess all the needs they have in order to be a successful business owner. Number two, I saw people being trained by non-entrepreneurs. All of our teachers are entrepreneurs that have been in the trenches and are still in the trenches. Third, all of our classes are limited to 10 to 12 people. So it’s a very interactive learning environment that’s not a lecture environment.
Alex: Nigel Clayton, thanks for being here in SBTV.com. Where can people go to learn more about any of your businesses?
Nigel Go to the internet, www.gettingtohighstreet.com, EBOS-USA.com and ClaytonAndAssoc.com.
