Ivy Hartman: Welcome to NAWBO 2008 here in Phoenix Arizona. Sbtv.com is covering the conference in its entirety. I'm Ivy Hartman and with me is one very special young lady Kayleena Tejada who is the Girls Going Places Award winner, one of them for this year. Congratulation!
Kayleena Tejada: Thank you.
Ivy Hartman: We’ll call her Tina for now because that’s what your friend and your family call you. Where are you from Tina?
Kayleena Tejada: I'm from Surprise Arizona so yeah I'm here.
Ivy Hartman: Oh good. It thought it was just a funny play on words when they said Surprise because now I know it’s really a place.
Kayleena Tejada: People are like where’s Surprise?
Ivy Hartman: Where is Surprise?
Kayleena Tejada: It’s on the west valley and it’s growing, it’s getting bigger.
Ivy Hartman: Well that’s good for business. Tell us about your business, what's the name of it and what do you do?
Kayleena Tejada: My business is mirror art and it’s called A Touch of Art and its getting started. I've done forum mirrors, I've done character mirrors and it all started really with community service. So that’s helped me a lot.
Ivy Hartman: Talk about your community project was. You have to cover up perfidious is that right?
Kayleena Tejada: Yeah and I'm still working on that we’ll see how that goes. Right now I'm still at the beginning process of that but my community service was more of—my mum does kids camps in the summer and we did for our church and they needed a set design and props that’s why I first got started on big sculpt painting that is like paint around like the Serengeti. That’s how it all begun and people saw it and they’ll like that’s good.
And then my nominator for the Guardian Girl Scholarship she asked for me to come and paint her son’s room so I was able to go in.
Ivy Hartman: Talk about what you're going to be doing with the award.
Kayleena Tejada: I'm hopefully going to use it for school and for art. I'm going for nursing, I’m going to a University. So in the future I hope to travel and not only bring nursing but also my art there to other countries as I travel so.
Ivy Hartman: Good. You’ve already started a future plan so that perfect. I love what you're going to do in the future. How does it feel to win this award?
Kayleena Tejada: It was such an honor. I'm just like amazed especially all the girls that applied for me to win it it’s just amazing I'm just blessed.
Ivy Hartman: You got a standing ovation in front of hundreds of women business owners, what was that like.
Kayleena Tejada: I don’t know I was like coming out of cloud. There's so sweet everyone I've met has been so nice and so kind of me and they're encouraging me so I look forward to future.
Ivy Hartman: As a young entrepreneur how did you learn all the aspects of running a business or how are you learning that. Mostly also I want you to give some advice to other young entrepreneurs.
Kayleena Tejada: Actually, it’s kind of coming gradually as you go. My advice for other entrepreneur is just go for it. You don’t know what you can do until you try it and don’t be afraid because as long as you have that few people to encourage you, you can do whatever you want to do. You can just go for the so and so.
Ivy Hartman: How do you keep from selling yourself short both monetarily when you're saying “yes I can do that for you as this is all my business”? How do you approach that as a young woman early in your entrepreneurial career? Is that one of the hardest things for you to do is there something else that’s more challenging?
Kayleena Tejada: Actually your talent that you use like for me painting isn’t that difficult but I have to deal with people and deal with calculating how much I work, how much it took me for gas to drive. So that part is a little bit hard for me but I enjoy the art so that’s the best part.
Ivy Hartman: So you're going to be a future woman business owner, take your art around the world.
Kayleena Tejada: Yeah that would be really great.
Ivy Hartman: We’re so proud of you.
Kayleena Tejada: Thank you so much for having.
Ivy Hartman: Thanks for spending time with us here on sbtv.com bringing you entrepreneurs of all ages and of all backgrounds and talents. Keep it right here at sbtv.com as we continue our coverage of NAWBO 2008 in Phoenix Arizona.
