Ivy Hartman: Welcome to sbtv.com in our exclusive coverage of NAWBO 2008 here in Phoenix Arizona. I'm Ivy Hartman and with me is Mica May of Mica May Design. Boy, it just stings Mica May Design. Mika let’s talk bout your business Mica May Design
Mica May: Well we are a boutique graphic design here in Dallas and I basically just love what I do. We have a blast. We do anything from logo and reprinting to corporate identities in brochures, invitations. Anything prints I kind of call myself the design diva.
Ivy Hartman: Well with your background in the design and artistic talents, how has the NAWBO chapter served you as a business owner?
Mica May: Well I've been member for about three years and the second I was involved with us to be on the board so I'm currently serving as the director of marketing which is going to my business like tremendous amount and I'm able to get back to our community like logos and things for them as well.
Ivy Hartman: How did you hear about NAWBO when you started?
Mica May: I just had a friend tell me actually. I kind of telling her what I do and she’s a wonderful woman herself. She just kind of shared the news and invited me to a lunch and after that it’s history.
Ivy Hartman: Yeah that’s true that viral marketing. I'm sure you find that true of your marketing technique.
Mica May: Yes, word of mouth and just personal relationships that’s kind of how I like to grow my business.
Ivy Hartman: Now in softer and economic time, how does the business Mica May Design stay competitive and do things to keep competitive and stay in the block.
Mica May: Well I think what's great about having a design company is we’re essentially a virtual studio and so we have very limited capital and upfront cost. And so the only that charges for my time and design and then printing charges if up to the client if they need something printed.
So we kind of save cost in terms of e-blast and e-newsletters and all the contacts that are going out these days. It’s really helpful for people to kind of cut cost on some corners in that way instead of actually printing materials which try to really help them get online presents.
Ivy Hartman: What are some of the trends when you're working with small business owners and they're hiring you to do their brand or the wrap it design for them. Is it really tailored just for them or are you hearing people say “I know what I want and this is how I wanted”.
Mica May: It’s all different, some clients are extremely particular and they say this is what I want and I might not agree, I might kind of cinema couple draft one with exactly what they wanted and one with my opinion and they usually go with the one that they wanted. Other client say “I don’t care this is your job, you write it you design it” and sometimes they just love it.
Ivy Hartman: How much do you need to know about a business in order to brand them or design their logo?
Mica May: I really like to talk extensively as much as possible. If I can't meet them in person I’d love to do a conference call to really kind of cater to exactly the feel that they're wanting to go forward and really trying to gain as much knowledge as I can.
Ivy Hartman: Talk about this conference here in Phoenix, what are you walking away with after this conference? What do you like the most?
Mica May: I have gained so much knowledge. The speakers alone have been so amazing. My little journal is full of note since it’s been so great and the women here are so nice, everyone is fabulous. I'm so excited to continue to follow up with them and really build business with each other nationwide and hopefully even globally too. A lot of international presidents are here it helps with the relationship worldwide.
Ivy Hartman: I agree that international presence is strong. Have you got to speak with a lot of women from other countries that are attending?
Mica May: I have not as much as I’ve hope because sometimes there’s a language barrier which is difficult but it’s so touching that I hope to get a little bit more connected with.
Ivy Hartman: And your business is such that you can do it in your office and it can go anywhere electronically. Mica May Design. Thanks Mika for being here with us. Have a safe trip to Dallas. If we want more information about Mica May Design where can we check you out?
