Small Business Stories - Skull Candy
Alex: The images in the Skull Candy Display at the 2009 consumer Electronic show would indicate this company conveys a certain attitude.
Skull Candy does things big. You might say do excel. President Jeremy Andrus tells us the small business story of this man, founder and CEO Rick Alden.
Alden started with the speed on the ground firmly planted and snowboard bindings of his own design.
Jeremy: As a founder of Skull Candy Rick Alden started an events company doing events for this further Pro snowboard tour back in the mid late 80’s and Rick is just is a true entrepreneur. He is always out with new ideas so Solo Snowboard Company invented the first click in food and binding system for snowboard.
Alex: So how does the designer start with snowboard bindings and then work his way north to audio headphone?
Jeremy: You know Skull Candy’s definitely not right for every consumer though we provided something that it was refreshing. I mean it re-invented the headphone space.
Alex: Andrus says Alden’s vision went beyond just selling a product. He was marketing a lifestyle.
Jeremy: Perhaps with speakers, jackets with iPod controls built in and it really goes back to what is the company all about. Is it a headphone brand, absolutely not? It’s a lifestyle brand. It’s about music. It’s about action, sports.
Alex: Skull Candy, a specialty company designing a product for you to wrap around your grey matter.
