Alex Fees: I’m Alex Fees on SBTV.com. We are coming to you from the 2008 NFIB. National Small Business Summit in Washington D.C. and what this here now is Wayne McIntyre. Wayne, I appreciate you being here.
Wayne McIntyre: Thank you.
Alex Fees: Wayne is the winner of the Sam’s club, NFIB, SBTV contest for small business owners. Now Wayne tell us about this. How did you even become aware of this contest to begin with?
Wayne McIntyre: Well we went in to sales one day and this lady at the office said, “would you like to be in a contest?” And we said yes and we filled it out and send it in and we were lucky winners.
Alex Fees: All right and your business in Tyler, Texas is McIntyre Plumbing Inc.
Wayne McIntyre: That’s right.
Alex Fees: How large is it? How many employees do you have Wayne?
Wayne McIntyre: We have 18 employees.
Alex Fees: 18.
Wayne McIntyre: 18 and we’ve been in business since 1985, you know.
Alex Fees: What was involved in enrolling in the contest?
Wayne McIntyre: Well what we had to do was we walked in and it was about 3 o’clock actually on the last day of 85.
Alex Fees: Oh really, wow.
Wayne McIntyre: And they had this little paper that you fill out and we actually went back to our office and got on the web and you filled it out and interview him.
Alex Fees: Yeah.
Wayne McIntyre: And that’s simple as that.
Alex Fees: And how long ago was this?
Wayne McIntyre: Probably about three weeks.
Alex Fees: Oh wow.
Wayne McIntyre: Three weeks ago, I suppose.
Alex Fees: So all that happened in a very short amount of time, huh?
Wayne McIntyre: Sure, yeah.
Alex Fees: What kind of information were they’re requiring on that?
Wayne McIntyre: They just wanted to know of how many employees you had and how long if you we’re or we’re not a member of Sam’s club and just things like that. They didn’t ask you anything much so that is in there.
Alex Fees: What about Sam’s club? Wayne is that a regular stop for you of being a small business owner?
Wayne McIntyre: Yes, we had all our office—you know I like tapping paper pins, pencils that you know, computer software, we bought it all.
Alex Fees: Yeah.
Wayne McIntyre: So if we use QuickBooks and we bought our QuickBooks from Sam’s.
Alex Fees: Okay, so when did you find out that you were even a finalist?
Wayne McIntyre: Well I was, actually I was playing golf.
Alex Fees: Really?
Wayne McIntyre: They called me on the phone, Susan called her to call me on the phone when I was playing golf and said you’re a winner. I didn’t believe it so.
Alex Fees: So there was no finalist, she was telling you’re the winner.
Wayne McIntyre: I was the winner.
Alex Fees: Wow, so what’s your reaction?
Wayne McIntyre: Surprised, I mean never won anything before so it’s kind of exciting really.
Alex Fees: And what all these at amount to, what all of you got out of this?
Wayne McIntyre: Well we got a—what we got is a lifetime membership to the NFIB.
Alex Fees: Right.
Wayne McIntyre: And we’ve got a one year from SBTV, they are going to come and monitor our business and help us in anything that they can, you know that we need then they can help us with.
Alex Fees: Sure, like one-year inventory.
Wayne McIntyre: Sure and then we also got $25,000.00 cash and we got $45,000.00 as being able to spend this on merchandise
Alex Fees: Wow. Like a $45,000.00 gift card.
Wayne McIntyre: That’s exactly right.
Alex Fees: Not bad.
Wayne McIntyre: That’s right; I got it in my pocket right here.
Alex Fees: Well, tell me so, prior to this, were you involved with NFIB?
Wayne McIntyre: Yes. I often own, you know, you know what I wasn’t this year
Alex Fees: Really.
Wayne McIntyre: I have been in the past but for, I don’t know for whatever reason I wasn’t this year.
Alex Fees: But what’s—well you’ve been here for a few days now at the 2008 conference, what have been your impressions?
Wayne McIntyre: It’s been the talent sale absolutely; I’ve never been here since—
Alex Fees: No, you’ve never been in DC before.
Wayne McIntyre: I’ve never been to a political rally or anything like this.
Alex Fees: Right.
Wayne McIntyre: That was really exciting and just too even get to see—most especially to shake McCain’s hand was pretty big deal for me.
Alex Fees: Yeah.
Wayne McIntyre: We’ve really enjoyed it so far.
Alex Fees: So what do you make of this and all the things have changed dramatically for you in a very short amount of time, it sounds like.
Wayne McIntyre: It’s been really neat. It really has. It’s been really, really great. We’ve enjoyed everything and everybody’s been so nice and so good to us. We’ve met a lot of hopefully new friends that we’re going to be in contact with from you know and go to more stuff.
Alex Fees: So what do you hope to do with this, with all the awards, the benefits, the mentoring, the money and everything?
Wayne McIntyre: Well you know, we’re going to make the money and make pays from our bills, probably the taxes that we got to pay, you know and then we’re just looking forward to be able to buy some stuff that ordinarily we wouldn’t get to buy it.
Alex Fees: Absolutely.
Wayne McIntyre: So you know, we know some things now that we’re going to be able to get and that we would normally not have got if it hadn’t not for Sam’s and this opportunity.
Alex Fees: All right. So you’re taking this back to Tyler, Texas.
Wayne McIntyre: Yeah.
Alex Fees: And get a, make some good things out of it.
Wayne McIntyre: You bet.
Alex Fees: All right. Wayne, thank you very much.
Wayne McIntyre: Thank you.
Alex Fees: I appreciate you being here; again, he is Wayne McIntyre at 2008 NFIB. He is the Sam’s club/NFIB/SBTV contest winner. We’re at the NFIB. I’m Alex Fees; you’re logged on to SBTV.
