Margaret: Hi! My name is Margaret and I am from New York. I was just wondering what additional health risks are there if I smoke while taking the pill? Shona Murray: Margaret if you take birth control pills, and smoke at the same time you are putting yourself at increased risk of heart attack. Now this is particularly true if you are over the age 35, in fact usually physicians not prescribe birth control pills to smokers over the age 35. Now having said that smoking is much more dangerous to your health, and birth control pills are. So you are much better off stopping smoking and keep on using birth control pills.
