Jennifer: Hi! I am Jennifer from Austin, Texas. I smoke and my doctor is reluctant to prescribe me birth control pills. I know there are risks but what are they? Dr. Holly Thacker: Well Jennifer, we would certainly prefer that you not smoke. If you're over age 35 and smoke cigarettes, the risk of heart attack and stroke is increased by 35 fold. So it's simply too risky to smoke and take the pill if you are over age 35.
