Soap in Your Bed to Relieve Cramps

Travis: Now, our next question comes from the Everglades State, in the mother of one of our staff members. We had her on speakerphone one day and when she asked this next question, we knew we had to cover it. Take a look.

Carol: Hi Doctors! This is Carol from Port St. Lucie, Florida. I am told that placing a bar soap in bed with me at night can stop leg cramps. Is that true?

Jim: Well Carol, I actually had never heard about this. So, I looked to the literature and I could not find any studies that showed that this worked but apparently, a lot of you guys out there swear by it and it did not matter whether it was a small bar of soap or a large one. So, we actually did a Twitter poll to see how many viewers were familiar with this technique. We asked, “Has a bar of soap in your bed helped your feet or leg cramps?” And 40% percent said “Yes, it had.” And among other comments, there was one like this from Joy who twitted “I used to get leg cramps on a regular basis until I started sleeping with the bar of soap and I have been sleeping with one ever since.” It doesn’t matter.

Travis: Your legs that don’t cramps and they smell great.

Jim: Yeah, I’ll try it.

Travis: Who’s going to hurt you? But again, no scientific basis for that.

Jim: Yeah. I still don’t know how it works but they swear by it.
