Sober by Pink Acoustic Guitar Lesson
What’s up, Free and Easy Guitar, it’s Aaron. The lesson I wanna teach you right now is on the song by Pink called Sober. I’m basically gonna teach you that little intro that you’ve probably will recognize, and then I’m just gonna teach you the chords the rest of the way out. Because basically just starting the verse, they play the, the intro. So, whatever I teach you the intro, you could play it repeatedly if you want to play only through the verse. And then you can play the chords if you, if you don’t wanna play that, and then I’m gonna teach you the chorus chords too. So, alright, the little intro sounds something like this, give me a second. Something like that, okay. I’m just gonna play that repeatedly. Something like that, so, what I’m gonna teach you, I want you to take your pointer finger, and this is gonna be a little different than what I’ve usually thought you, but I want you to take your pointer finger, alright. I want you to bar press all six strings, okay. The reason I’m doing this is licks, when we get down to here you need this… bass note. And I want you to have it on there the whole time so it’s less movement. So, 6th fret bar across all six strings, then I want you to take your ring and pinky, put them on the 8th frets on the two note strings, see your ring is on your D, pinky’s on your G string. Alright, and what you’re gonna do is you’re only gonna play, you’re gonna try and play just these, the two, oh I’m sorry, the five - four, and three strings. Okay, so you’re gonna play. Okay, after you play the five – four - three, I actually wanna, when I’m getting the move down I play this four string again, and kinda like slide down. So it sounds like this, you can either play just five – four – three… slide down to play five – four – three or you can play it either you like it. So see it’s only five – four – three I’m playing. Five – four – three – four, and I’m playing that four, that last four, right before you heard the slide down. So… you might not even hear it, okay. That cut, so, sorry I’m popping around, I’m trying to remember how to play it. Bar across all six strings, 6th fret, middle two strings in the 8th fret, ring and pinky, so you play five string, four string, three string, and then you can or cannot, up to you, play the four string again, okay. So five – four – three, and then slide everything down four frets, so your bar is now on the second fret, your ring and pinky is now on the D and G strings on the 4th fret, okay. And you play the same thing, five string, four, three, and then you can optionally, you put a four again if you want. And then after that, the next sets of riffs you’re gonna play is, you’re gonna play the low E string, with your pointer finger covering that 2nd fret. That’s why I want you to bar all six strings here, even though you’re not playing this low E note. So you go… like we just talk about, and then you put low E, okay. Did it in the six string, okay. Then you play four, and then if you’re gonna play the third string, your pinky finger was on the 4th fret before, you wanna take your pinky off for just a minute and put your ring finger on that G string on the 3rd fret, okay. So, you’re gonna play six – four – three – four- and then you’re gonna put your pinky finger back on the 4th fret, and you’re gonna play three string - four string - three string - four string – three sting – pull that pinky off, so, and then play the four string again, okay. So use the tab, help you out by several something like this, I’ll play it slow. Okay, that’s the intro that I just played, there’s a little bit of variations that you can add into it, want it on that last part, but I would suggest just playing it how I have it in the tab that I made, I made this tab. And then the only thing that I would tell you to do is, if during the verse you wanna play the chords instead of that, that intro riff, you can play, let’s see… okay. Here are the four chords I want you to play, okay. You can play up here which is a, E flat, I believe, okay. Now, if you’re just strumming these chords you don’t want to bar across all six, you just want to bar across the bottom five, here on the 6th fret. Ring pinky on the two note strings, okay. And you play…so… just playing down – down – up – down – down – up, now slide down here, down – down – up – down – down – up, then I’ll move my bar up here, to bar all six strings and your ring and pinky are all on the five and four strings, 4th fret, and this little finger’s up here. And then the fourth chord, you’re gonna bar across, on the 4th fret bar across the bottom five strings, ring and pinky there, in the two middle strings on your D and E. Same strum pattern on the first three and the last one is down – down – up – down – down – up – up – down, okay, and I kinda mute like. Kinda like that in my head. So, the verse like we just talk about and explain is… okay. If you don’t want to play that during the verse, you wanna strum it, play this, okay. I’m gonna have the tab for the four chords, don’t stress out. And then, for the chorus, you’re gonna play four chords too, and you’re basically gonna play four chords that I’ve just taught you for the, yah, you’re gonna play the four chords that I’ve just taught you for the verse. So, you’re gonna play this one, just strum pattern, while you’re up here in this E flat? E minor? No, it’s an E flat, you just basically playing, just try to play top four strings, so you don’t need to do the bar, and cover this B string, you don’t need to cover that on the 8th fret. Because you’re just trying to strum the top four strings. Okay, so you’re gonna play… E flat, and then you’re gonna slide down here, and this is your B chord. Remember you don’t need to do this bar thing because you’re just playing the top four strings, so this is enough. So, E flat, down to B and the strum patterns is down – down – up – down – down – up, switch down – down – up – down – down – up, switch, this is an F sharp, down – down – up – down – down – up, switch, and this is your C sharp, down – down – up – down – down – up – up – down, so you’re… it’s alright. That’s what happen if you don’t mute that low E string when you’re strumming this first chord, you have… see how bad this sounds, wanna make sure this low E is muted. And that’s what you wanna play for the verse and the chorus. So, remember E flat, to that is your B chord to an F sharp to your C sharp, C. So, if you’re having trouble with the strumming pattern, remember, strum patterns don’t matter, it’s all about the rhythm, you can do all down strums all down – up, you don’t have to switch it, but, don’t, please don’t ask for the strum pattern, I kinda wanna push you guys to start developing your own ear for strum patterns. So, listen to it, ten, twenty times, however long it takes, and eventually you will get it, I promise you, even if it means skipping those strum patterns for this song and just come in back. So, please try and figure the strum pattern out for yourself. I’m not copping out. I will give it to you one time real quick, down – down – up – down – down – up - down – down – up – down – down – up - down – down – up – down – down – up – up – down – up – down – down - down – up. There you go, so you want that watch it. Figure stuff out yourself. Find your own preferences, and good luck with the song, FreeandEasyGruitar.com
