Hi, this is Mike Callahan and welcome back to our special Butterscotch.com five part series on how to deal with spam.
In this segment we’re going to look at using software filters to filter out spam. Now a product such as mail washer is installed on your computer and it functions to act as a filter to filter out junk email. It will use Bayesian filtering which learns from your email what is good and what is bad.
Most antivirus and antispyware programs now also include spam filtering. McAfee, Cisco, there are specific programs that are dedicated to fighting spam. SPAM fighters, Spam Eater, I Hate Spam, there are utmost programs. The key thing to remember is that also these filters go by list of known spammers, known keywords that are used by spammers and known patterns.
Some of the tricks that spammers used are to spell things innovatively like using a one for an L, they use bogus to and from addresses and they use misleading URLs. Perhaps the key factor in spam is that they use zombie machines and the way they get these machines are to infect them with Spyware. Sometime the sole purpose of infecting the machine is to take control of it and to use it as part of a giant network for sending spam.
There are a number of spam programs available. I've got links to them in the show notes. So this is a software filter method of dealing with spam. Remember that this is a multi parts series and make sure you see all of the parts.
