Shalom, I am Rabi Jonathan Ginsburg of the Ezra-Habonim, Niles Township Jewish Congregation. This video is intending to talk to you about piece of the pass over Haggadah the song to the end. So many people put the Haggadah away after dinner and do not bother to deal with beautiful, wonderful and educational song that occur at the end of the Haggadah. The main one I want to talk about today is the goat story Haggadiah, we sing it with very simple tune [sing with a foreign language].
Now a lot of people wonder what is the song about a goat being bought by a father and sold for 2 coins and then a series of things happen to this goat. A cat, a dog, a stick, stick is burned, the water put out by fire, the water is drunk by an ox, the ox is slaughtered by the angel of death and the angel of death is slain by god. So what is the song after do it with Pesach. It is actually a very important educational song. It deals with all of the empires that conquered the Jewish people. We are of course the baby goat, god is the father, the two shackles are the two tablets of the ten commandments and each one of the things that hurt us over the course of time are the various empires to try to shallow us up in some cases did. Egypt and you have right after the Egypt, you have the destruction of the ten Northern tribes by Assyria and then the Babylonians, Iraqis destroying the temple and taking the people from Judah back to Babylonia. The Persians conquering the Babylonians today’s Iran and you have the Greeks conquering the Persians. And you have the Hanukkah story 165, and the Romans after Greeks and so on and so fort until we come in the modern times and the angel of death is slain by God and Jewish are still here.
Pesach is a story redemptions of the past, and so it is one of the great story of the redemptions of the future. And this song is very important to that Idea urge you not to put Haggadah way after dinner but sing the Haggadiah and learn the song so that we can teach ourselves to Jewish history and the way which, the miraculous way which the Jewish people survive. Have a wonderful pass over.
