Sony Ericsson W890 - Review
You are watching Phone Arena’s video review of the new Sony Ericsson W890, the successor of the W880. The new device has modified appearance and improved functionality. The most noticeable innovations include the rounded edges and the material aluminum from which the device is manufactured. The black lid of the phone is entirely made of the light metal used on a mass scale in the air craft industry.
The people from Sony Ericsson have managed to fit a 2-inch TFT display here with specs same as of the old model, 240x420 pixels and 262,000 colors. The colors are well saturated, bright and real however the screen turns into a mirror when exposed to direct sunlight. Over the display, we have the VGA camera for video calls, the front speaker, the screen’s light sensor and the Walkman logo. Below it is typical for a Candybar are positioned to navigation buttons and the numeric keypad.
The 5-way D-pad has kept its unique shape and the buttons surrounding it have become more compact shaped as a half-eaten moon. But they are positioned very close to it and sometimes pressing them can be a hard task. The design of the numeric keypad has also been radically changed. Now the buttons are large and thick which makes them more comfortable than those of the W880.
On the left side we have the W890 Walkman button and the charger connector. The memory slot is also here but it is now located under the back lid and there is an indication for it. There are changes on the right as well. The volume rocker has replaced the small and uncomfortable slide but the camera key has remained the same. The most interesting innovation is that there are two small lockers on the back lid. This new locking system keeps it stable and not allowing any play.
The successor of W880 has also undergone a series of upgrade. W890 runs on the same software used by the rest of the high class phones including W910 and K850. In the media menu you will see a new flash interface with options for photos, music, video and settings. The phone uses Walkman 3.0 which is the upgrade to the 2.0 version. Its interface is not different from the ones seen in the rest of the phones using the same version. The visualization and the set option appears in the top part of the screen and in the bottom we see track information and D-pad functions indicator.
Landscape mode can also be used but due to the lack of an auto-rotation sensor you have to set it manually. It is nice that we are able to minimize the player in the background and to use the rest of the phone functions while listening to your favorite tunes. W890 has a built-in FM Stereo radio but for it you should used the headphones as an antenna. The radio supports RDS so text information from the stations will be streamed. A total of 20 stations can be saved and names can be added to them so they are easier to distinguish.
The W80’s camera is 3.2-megapixel but unfortunately it lacks autofocus and a flash. The interface is the same as of W910 in landscape mode and using the entire display as a viewfinder. The left software key opens the options menu where you can set the mode resolution and other settings like night mode, self timer, white balance etcetera. Sony Ericsson W890 is a nice, light and slim Walkman which will satisfy even the good, precious music fans.
Moreover, the nice appearance and combination with the quality sounds will compensate for the lack of autofocus and flash. If you're looking for a beautiful music phone W890 is a very good choice. Visit PhoneArena.com for the full review.
