Sony Pocket PC Review
Mike Agerbo: Over hanging out here with Brent De Waal from Sony. Thanks for coming on the show again.
Brent De Waal: No problem.
Mike Agerbo: I was lovely looking at the latest in Sony here and this is no exception to cool. This is a pocket style of PC. Don’t call it a notebook though.
Brent De Waal: That’s right, this PC is a really incredible design, and very small, very light, 1.4 pounds so that’s incredibly light. You’ve got an Atom processor 2-gigs RAM, it runs Vista.
The really neat thing about this PC is the screen. You’ve got 1600 x 768, so you can actually have big pages open. You have biggest sales spreadsheet. You can have the font up or down depending on how good your eyes are and the resolution of it and the brightness really make it much more like using a rail or PC, and the size just makes it available anywhere.
Mike Agerbo: A lot of people are going to compare this to the netbook category where we’re seeing these little mini-laptops. They’re like 9-inch screens and starting in like the $300.00 price range. This has got a bigger price tag. What makes the difference between the two?
Brent De Waal: Lots of them saying the screen is a really big part of it with the high resolution, the LED backlighting as well in terms of the design. It will run for quite a long time on the battery. There’s no fan in here. It’s an extremely high performing piece. We’ve got Vista. When we go to Windows 7 you’ve really got a great performing piece instant on with the cross media bar so you can watch videos, looking to your pictures, listen to music, all there very easy to use.
Mike Agerbo: Well, let’s talk some of the ports here on the side. We’ve got I believe two USB ports and you’re not seeing a VGA connector but you can add the adapter. This comes with it?
Brent De Waal: That’s right, the adapter comes with it. It’s a little break out for your ethernet and monitor that plugs right in the side here.
Mike Agerbo: I see plug it in here and you’re basically good to go.
Brent De Waal: It’s got built-in WiFi, built-in camera Bluetooth, so you get a Bluetooth mouse and you can use it like a regular PC as well the adapter that comes with it, very small and light so it’s not like you get this really small computer and then something as big and heavy as if to power it. Everything is designed for taking it on the move and being able to use it anywhere.
Mike Agerbo: And so what kind of price points are we looking here roughly?
Brent De Waal: We’re looking at around $999.00 just a hundred of thousand dollars for this. Again, we’re looking at a high performance PC and then an incredibly small form factor that’s why you can get a bundled with the nice leather case and the matching mouse as well for a couple of hundreds of dollars more.
Mike Agerbo: So, what kinds of people are buying this such as business people or just regular consumer?
Brent De Waal: We’re getting a wide range. Younger people really like it because it’s like the cell phone. It’s the piece that you want to take out in the coffee shop and surf the lab, yeah a little big for a phone. It does have the video composing capabilities with the built-in camera.
Mike Agerbo: Well, thanks for joining us on the show today, you’re back. Brent De Waal from Sony looking at the pocket style PC from Sony.
