On Tuesday, Sony unveiled the third E-reader with wireless internet access to compliment two devices announced earlier. The new reader Daily edition is priced at about USD400 and will have connectivity through AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband network to Sony’s E-bookstore. The other two models are the Reader Pocket Edition and the Reader Touch Edition, which are available now and were announced last August. The new Reader Daily will be available in December at Sony Style stores and on SonyStyle.com.
The Reader Daily has a seven-inch wide touch screen display that shows 30 to 35 lines of text when held in portrait mode. The reader can display 16 levels of gray scale and it has enough internal memory to hold more than a thousand standard E-books. It also includes an expansion slot for additional memory cards. Users will be able to purchase and download books, newspapers, and magazines with no monthly fees or charges for basic wireless connectivity.
Earlier this month, Sony announced the availability of more than a million free public domain books from Google. The store also includes new releases and best sellers for about $10.00 a title. Sony’s Reader Touch Edition and the Reader Pocket edition were announced earlier this month. The Touch Edition has a 6-inch touch screen and cost about $300.00 and the Reader Pocket Edition, a basic E-reader with a 5-inch screen cost about $200.00. The family of Sony E-readers are aimed squarely at the Amazon’s kindle, the latest generation kindle includes a 6-inch screen, can store up 1500 books, and cost about $300.00.
