Tensions have been high between the two Koreas in the past couple of days — with the South holding live-fire naval drills, and the North warning of a full-scale war in retaliation. Here’s KPRC .
“Yesterday on state TV North Korea warned the South it would shell the islands close to the border if the South went ahead with its military drills. This morning South Korean officials announced the drills will continue.”
The New York Times suggests North Korea’s threats are nothing new.
“North Korea claims the waters around the five South Korean islands, which are patrolled by South Korean warships, and seldom fails to vow “merciless” retaliation when the South Korean military conducts exercises there.”
But CNN points out — the last time South Korea ran drills in the area, North Korea did retaliate .
“In late 2010, North Korea responded to a South Korean military exercise ... by firing artillery at Yeonpyeong Island, killing two South Korean marines and two civilians.”
For the moment, there’s been no such response. MSNBC reports the two-hour exercise ended without incident .
“South Korea reported no immediate action by North Korea following the drills, which ended after about two hours. North Korea's military maintained increased vigilance during the South Korean drills, though it hasn't done anything suspicious, a South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff officer said...”
South Korea also plans to complete joint exercises with the U.S. military on Feb. 27.
