Audra: Whether you’re planning a party, having weekend guest or you simply just
want to add a little spice to your house without spending a lot of time or
money, Jill Vegas is your girl. She’s the author of Speed Decorating and
she’s here with the makeover boot camp that’s going change the entire feel
of your house in no time at all. It doesn’t take a lot of effort, right Jill.
Jill: No.
Audra: Good to have you here.
Jill: Thank you.
Audra: I can tell from your last name we’re going to have a lot of fun, Vegas.
Jill: We sure are.
Audra: The first tip that you is really the kind of discover your inner decorator and
just really be happy with the home that you have.
Jill: Yes.
Audra: A lot of people want to go buy another home to change things up so what
do you mean by that?
Jill: It’s all about loving the home you have right now. It’s not about the grass
is green or someday when I have windfall of money and I renovate, forget
it it’s about loving the home you have and taking action to make it the best
home possible right now.
Audra: Okay, alright and also finding furniture that you love.
Jill: Yes.
Audra: What do you mean by the furniture that you love? Like how do you know
you’re going to just love it after 2 years of being in your home?
Jill: Well it’s true. Definitely for me it’s about finding a piece that you
absolutely love like finding something like a basic sofa. You can go with
something like a white sofa and then you can always change it up if in 2
years you decide you hate it you can put new throws and new pillow and
you’ve got a whole new look.
Audra: Even in the kid’s room too because you’ve got some really cute furniture
in there.
Jill: Yeah.
Audra: Because their rooms are going to change up a lot.
Jill: Yeah. Definitely, you can get new accessories, do bed spreads and change
it up.
Audra: Local art is another one of your tips, why local art?
Jill: Art is something that will add so much personality to a space. It’s not a
generic thing you found at TJ Max or whatever. It’s like you know what
buy a piece that has real authentic meaning and value, it will make your
home have a completely unique style to you, you’re supporting a local
artist. It’s perfect.
Audra: Now the thing that I love the most about decorating is lighting and I know
that that’s key but if you’re not a pro and you don’t know exactly what
you’re doing, what would your tips be for lighting?
Jill: Well you could do something with, look at the light fixtures you have, do
you love them, if you don’t get rid of them and buy new ones. One like
you could get a hanging pendant that’s always beautiful in a foyer or
something as simple as candle light.
Audra: The candle light always is really good too.
Jill: Yeah it looks great.
Audra: Now you would say banish beige. You’re going to throw of a lot of people
because we all love the beige but why are you saying to get rid of that
color in particular.
Jill: Banish beige, it’s safe and boring so why not bring in just an injection of
fun and color into your home and I’m not saying make it like a rump or a
room but you can select certain pieces that will bring so much color and
life and energy into your home something as simple is like a bouquet of
flowers.
Audra: Right, so it doesn’t have to be anything drastic in terms of feeling like that.
Okay and where do you get your inspiration from in terms of decorating
ideas?
Jill: Well I love this city. I love walking around New York and getting
inspiration in store fronts and in nature, I love looking at moss on the
ground and like okay well how can you bring that nice color that softness
into your home. You’re not going to bring moss but like that color so it’s
like oh maybe you want to try green then or something like that.
Audra: Well you have some good tips here I love it, thank you so much.
Jill: You’re welcome.
Audra: I remember that about the beige though to. You guys want to get Speed
