Spices of Life: Affordable Bubblies Part II
Howie: That’s what the French call the soft erotic side.
Nina: Hi this is Nina Simons with Spices of Life. And we are part two of our affordable bubblies champagnes with our favorite wine master, Howie Rubin from Bauer Wine and Spirits. And Howie, I can’t wait to know what you have next. So what are you going to introduce us to.
Howie: Well the holidays are a fun time to get family and friends together, open up some bubbly. The next level up of the scale are the American bubblies. and it’s a great success story because French families went over to America back in the 1980s, it sounds like it’s so long ago, and they started the domain showdown was the first domain mom taking job, opened up the domain cornero, so one of my favorites is Louie Roederer opened up roederer estate. And for them it’s all about fruit source. They have a great food source in Mendocino. So these grapes are grown in the cool climate up the coast in Mendocino. Anderson Valley, in from the coast and that’s where these grapes come from. And it’s a blend of pinot noir and chardonnay. It’s very delicate, it’s elegant. But you really pick up the pinot noir quality of the wine. It’s like that nutty, berry, really elegant flavor to it. And I think this is one of the more successful American sparkling wine stores. It’s a typical champagne.
Nina: And this is a very pale. It seems—
Howie: Yes, very pale. The Pinot Noir skins don’t show up in the color.
Nina: That’s much more of a pronounced flavor.
Howie: Yeah, you get the little sharp pinpoint—
Nina: It’s fruity, very nice.
Howie: You get a little nuttiness from the Pinot Noir and you get a little bit of peach in the nose, because this area is known for their peaches. And it’s obviously got a French touch. It’s more like French champagne than a lot of the American bubblies.
Nina: And so, what would something like this retail for?
Howie: About $20.00 to the most. Most of the Americans fall into that category.
Nina: What do you serve this with? Obviously, the normal things that caviar, smoked almond, tapas might be nice but anything in particular if you were serving this.
Howie: There’s this some weight to it. It’s got some richness to the mouth. I think this would stand up to a good roast salmon, or during the summer like a seeder plank salmon, you pick up that nice nutty flavor. I think you could do certain types of pasta dishes, it would work with it. I think even like a pork tenderloin. I believe serving bubbly with meals.
Nina: This would be terrific anytime during the New Year when you’re feeling like you need a little bit of—
Howie: A little boost.
Nina: Yeah exactly. Well, this is terrific. I love this. So thank you Howie.
Howie: My pleasure.
Nina: This is part two of Affordable Bubblies and I can’t wait to see what we have coming up in part three so stay tuned. Thanks Howie.
Howie: My pleasure.
