Howie Rubin: I’m getting a little bit of mint, a little bit of eucalyptus and definitely some wild spices.
Nina Simonds: Mint and eucalyptus?
Howie Rubin: Yeah, I got a little mint there.
Nina Simonds: Have you been smoking? No, I mean, no, I’m kidding.
Howie Rubin: No, but I can if you like.
Spices of Life
Discover Fabulous
Roses (Pt.2)
Nina Simonds: Hi, this is Nina Simonds from Spices of Life and we’re back with our favorite wine guru, Howie Rubin who is the Co-Owner and General Manager of Bauer Wines on Newbury St. in Boston. Hi, Howie. How are you?
Howie Rubin: I’m doing great.
Nina Simonds: I’m starting to fell good. Actually, the Rose’s are kicking in. Its 9:30 a.m. but who cares. So, we are introducing to more Roses for our Spices of Life audience and tell us about these. What’s going on here?
Howie Rubin: Well, we’re going to go a little bit further up the ladder and the flavor intensity. Everything is coming up Roses’ so we’re going to notch it up a little bit.
Nina Simonds: Okay.
Howie Rubin: And this Rose, one of my personal favorites is called Montes and it's on the Montes family in Chile. That’s a well steady label.
Nina Simonds: Really cool. Yeah.
Howie Rubin: The Cherub he made is a attribute to one of the friends of the family of Montes and this is like their second vintage of this wine.
Nina Simonds: Oh, really?
Howie Rubin: And it's really colorful and vibrant and I love the color of this wine.
Nina Simonds: Oh, look at that color.
Howie Rubin: This is the triumph of rose. It is this beautiful vibrant color.
Nina Simonds: Yeah, that is lovely.
Howie Rubin: So the qualities of this arrival, a little blue berry, a little spice, a little mint, a little chocolate and this will come through here.
Nina Simonds: Oh,yeah. I smell that. I smell strawberries, definitely.
Howie Rubin: Yeah, wild strawberries like the kind you’d picked out in the field.
Nina Simonds: {Foreign Language} Yeah, definitely. Okay and what are you tasting?
Howie Rubin: The deep berry fruit. Again, a little of that blue berry from Syrah. I’m getting a little bit of mint, a little bit of eucalyptus but it's a wady wine. This has a lot of wade to it.
Nina Simonds: Definitely the substance.
Howie Rubin: Now, this is something you can do with a nice a meat dish with maybe a chili rub. I personally like rose with the thanksgiving meal because it's the only thing that stands up to the demon cranberry sauce.
Nina Simonds: Right, great. Okay, let’s go on to the next one.
Howie Rubin: Keeping with the Southern Hemisphere theme here, I brought a Mulderbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Rose from South Africa. So here we have Cabernet Sauvignon and a little bit of Cabernet Franc. A little bit earthy in the nose. It's going to give you a little earthy. And that’s Cabernet Franc which is why they added it to the blend just to give you a little pop to the nose.
Nina Simonds: Okay.
Howie Rubin: So here, you’re going to get a lot of wild berries. I get some nice herbs and spices.
Nina Simonds: Wow, what do you taste?
Howie Rubin: And I get earthy and the minerality.
Nina Simonds: Yeah, definitely earthy.
Howie Rubin: That’s Cabernet Franc but it’s not tilted too far on that direction. It’s very well balanced. You get the black berry and the cabernet, you get a lot of spices that got a lot of herb, the provence, I get a little pomegranate, you know that nice sharpness and this would be great with any of your Asian dishes.
Nina Simonds: Okay, so this is great with seafood, meat. Well Howie, once again, you’ve scored brilliantly.
Howie Rubin: Cheers.
Nina Simonds: And we’re going to be drinking some more Roses with Howie. But for now, this is Nina Simonds, Spices of Life and here’s to more Rose.
