Howie Rubin: I’m a Grenache whore. I’ll admit it.
Nina Simonds: Gee! I would have never known how to look at you, Howie.
Howie Rubin: I wish I had a t-shirt saying “Grencache Whore.”
Nina Simonds: Hi, this is Nina Simonds feeling much better after our second Rose tasting but I am very excited because Howie Rubin, our favorite wine guru who’s the co-owner and General Manager of Bauer Wines on Newburry St. is back. So Howie, welcome back.
Howie Rubin: Thank you.
Nina Simonds: And take it away, tell us what you have for these Roses. I’m very excited.
Howie Rubin: Well this pairing, I wanted to focus on the old world. The old world being Europe and they have been drinking Rose for a long time so it’s been part of their culture. It’s not a trend. That’s what they drink and when the weather gets really gets really warm which it does in Europe over the summer, there’s not a lot of air conditioning, they cool off with a nice glass of Rose. So we are going to start with a Spanish Rose from a really good winery called Las Rocas. So once again we are talking about vibrant, brilliant color it kind of jumps out of the glass it says summer.
Nina Simonds: Oh yeah isn’t that nice.
Howie Rubin: It’s brilliant.
Nina Simonds: So you know when I’ve started doing almost just chilling the wine and then taking it out a little bit before I serve it.
Howie Rubin: That’s a good way to do it.
Nina Simonds: What do you think?
Howie Rubin: That’s good because that brings it to room temperature.
Nina Simonds: So this on is—
Howie Rubin: This is a 100% Grenache.
Nina Simonds: It’s so balanced.
Howie Rubin: There’s acid there. There’s plenty of fruit.
Nina Simonds: It’s terrific.
Howie Rubin: The fruit is there but in any good wine you need acid to balance out the fruit.
Nina Simonds: Now this I could sit drinking on its own.
Howie Rubin: This is beautiful on its own.
Nina Simonds: It is.
Howie Rubin: It’s easy.
Nina Simonds: It’s fabulous.
Howie Rubin: It’s very thirst quenching which is what Roses should be. Isn’t this beautiful?
Nina Simonds: Beautiful.
Howie Rubin: Now we are going to a little island of the coast of Italy which most people have heard of and it’s called Sardinia. They are known for their nice heavy red wines and they make a great Rose. This is a winery that’s been there for a long time. It’s called the Argiolas. So this is made predominantly from a grape called Cannonau and the Cannonau grape is Grenache. It’s a little more exotic in the nose. You’re getting some herbs, like artichoke. I get a little like a lavender, like an herb that belongs to it. But I think it’s typical of the island of Sardinia. I would have it with some classic island cuisine, sun dried tomatoes, I would have it with some sausages.
Nina Simonds: Well Howie this is amazing. I can’t thank you enough.
Howie Rubin: It’s a pleasure.
Nina Simonds: This has been really just illuminating. It just opened up our entire Rose world.
Howie Rubin: Great. Wine is about dialogue and friendship and sharing and food and travel and experience and that what your website is all about. And that’s what I try and do at my store too.
Nina Simonds: That’s just great, Howie. I’m going to cry but let’s drink instead.
Howie Rubin: Cheers.
Nina Simonds: Thank you so much.
Howie Rubin: You’re welcome.
Nina Simonds: Cheers.
Male: Thanks to our sponsor, Legal Sea Foods.
Nina Simonds: How was that?
