Spinning Star

Greetings! It is one week closer to Christmas and we have our bells block done, so now I thought I switched over to some stars. This is not going to be a standing star, this is going to be spinning star.
Hi, I am Penny Halgren from www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com welcome, and if you are ready I am ready to get started. This is a picture of the block that I will be showing and let us go over to the sewing machine.
Because my flannel board is occupied with another quilt block, I am just going to set up these patches right next to my sewing machine and sew them together. The first one that I am going to work on are the corner patches and you can see that all of the little tips of the triangle gets some together first. So what I am going to do is put the color green on top of the red and so this right sides together and I will do that with all four other red triangles and green triangles. Now with those sewn together it is time to add the second triangle on to the unit and because I want this star the red points to stand out I am going to fold the seam allowance behind and what that is going to do is it is going to make the in the ditch to the green and the fabric from the red fabric is going to stand out. And the reason I am making that decision right now is that when I add this second piece on, I end up sewing that seam allowance down so that it is facing toward the red fabric.
Now that this unit is sewn together, it is time to add this little corner triangle to the bottom and that will complete this square for each of the patches of the corner. All these little corner units service on together and now just looking at the pattern what we have left are some half squared triangles that need to be connected, so I am just going to sew the half squared triangles together and that is half green and half yellow and those are pretty simple; you just fold on the right sides together and stitch.
Because I do not have flannel board and I am working with kind of limited space, I am just going to line this up one road at a time. So I have got my two corner patches with the star points here and I have my half square triangle sewn together. So the next thing I need to do is sew this half square triangle unit onto the square. And now that I have got that units sewn together I am going to stitch this three together so I will have the half of the block done. And I am just going to flip this over, sew this together and what I am going to do is make sure that I sew this seam allowance so that it is facing up so that I have that entire red thing with the seam allowances behind it.
I have got those two pieces sewn and then I am just going to add the third and again make sure that I sew this seam allowance so that it is facing toward the red triangle. Now I have got the top section complete and I ready to sew the center section together and I am going to change stitch as much as I can. So I have got these two pieces that I can sew it together and then I have got these two pieces that I could sew together. So now I have got these two units sewn together and I am going to put those together and then after I finished sewing this together I will add this piece on the end.
Now I have got the top row and this center section finished and instead of sewing the whole three rows together and then sewing the rows on to each other, I am going to change this up a little bit and I am going to sew the center section and then to the top section. So as you do this then you are just going to want to make sure that you wind up all of this seam allowances where they match and turn them in opposite direction where you can and although you want to make sure that you press them or you stitch them the same way that they are already stitched so that you do not end up with any crossovers.
And now we are ready for the bottom part. So the first thing to do is sew this two pieces together the square on to the half square triangles. Now I have got the center sections done so I will just going to take that and folded it over and sew it on to the corner piece. And we have this last corner piece that just gets sewn unto the remainder of that row.
Then finally, we get to sew the bottom row on to the rest of the block and then it will be complete. Our spinning star is all finished now and you can see why it is called a spinning star because it is pretty cool, nice bright Christmas colors. There is just one star left before Christmas and I hope you will join me next week for whatever stars happens to be coming up. This is Penny Halgren from QuiltBlockLibrary.com signing off. Peaceful piecing.
