The most common and easy shrew to use is the open-phase fixed-spool reel.
There are a lot of good quality reels on the market at very affordable prices but it is worth spending just a little bit more on a slightly better quality one if you can afford it.
Now, to get the best in any of these reels, you need to know how to load the line correctly. And to tune these reel, we tune them by using a bright diameter line and by loading the spool to with a one and a half to two millimeters to the top of the spool.
The ideal line for general fishing is around two and a half to three pounds breaking straight and for ledgering, about six pounds.
Let us take a look of a couple of reels.
(Demo and Examples)
The reel one we have here is loaded with incorrect line. The line is far too heavy and they are simply not enough on the spool. This reel will give you major problems in casting.
Next stop, this is a correctly loaded spool. As you can see, the line diameter is correct—this is two and a half pounds. The spool is loaded to with a one and a half to two millimeters at the surface. This will perform perfectly every time you cast.
Now, to use a fixed spool reel is very simple.
To allow line to come off, it is simply undo the bay line and line will flow freely for casting. And to close the bay line,

That will lock the line and allow you to actually reel the line in—very simple.
Finally, if you are right handed like my self, then you will always use the handle on the left hand side. If you are left handed, then you need to change the reel handle and use it on the right hand side. Very simple to do, you just undo the lock knot on the rear of the handle, swap the handle over and retighten and that is it.
