Hi I am Dave Epstein, welcome to Growing Wisdom. Spring time is a wonderful time of the year. Now, I want to show you a spring tuber like particularly love for areas that are in your garden that maybe get some dappled shade during the course of the summer but during the early spring before the leaves come out is in full sun. The more we are looking at here is winter aconite it is also known as eranthis and there wonderful yellow flowers. Eranthis is actually a little tuber just absolutely spectacular, it creates his beautiful carpet here of yellow. You can also see the green leaves, eventually as the flowers begin to die but whistle get fairly high they grow to be about 6 inches tall or so maybe a little bit higher and then basically disappear over the course of the summer only to come back again next year and this will continue to spread. You can actually move these let say you create a patch of them or you have a neighbor that have some of these you want to ask for few you can actually dig this up and I want to show you what you get.
So, if you dig this up here there is a little bit tuber here and that is where the roots come out off going from the bottom down into the earth and then the plants come up from the top of the tuber and it is very similar to say an Irish, Irish is obviously much wider tuber so if you trans plant this you basically just move this into an area nice premise rich well drained with some moisture kind of soil and you want it in partial sunshine. You do not want this in full sun all summer long, but you do not want them also in full shade. If you plant these during the fall good idea is to soap the tubers over night and then you can plant the tubers in the ground after that, but that would be in the fall if you order this in the catalog or gotten from say a nursery or something like that.
So two ways you can actually increase the number of these that you have one is of course, you want to buy a new tuber or you can dig up some of these and move them to a new area and start your own new patch. So, we are talking early spring zone 5, 6 and 7 a March time frame to this map to a little bit early further south in of course a little bit later as you getting into some of the colder zones.
