Sprinkler System Winterizing Tips
Hey, I’m Sean with Sprinkler Daddy and in this video it’s a little bit too late but I wanted to touch on a little bit about how to get your sprinkler system ready for the winter if a freeze comes early and you’re not ready for it and haven’t got your sprinklers blowing out. I know its pass that time of year for this year but hopefully this video will help some people next year.
This was particularly pertinent for people with manifolds that sit on the side of their house. So you’ve got the manual on and off valves sitting exposed on the side of your house. Now, if there is freezing coming and you haven’t had a chance to get your sprinklers blown out, it’s not the end of the world, you don’t want to leave it for too long but there’s a few steps that you can take to kind of prevent some damage from happening to your sprinkler system.
So what you want to do, step number one is go on to your basement and shut off the water supply that goes to your outside sprinkler system. So you want to shut that off so that no water is continually flowing into the valves outside. Then the next thing you want to do is the valves that are sitting on the side of the wall specially just open those up so that any water that stock inside of the valve can drain out because if you don’t do that, what’s going to happen is the water that’s sitting in those valves is just going to freeze and expand and then your valves are going to crack and you’re going to have to replace your valves.
Now the valves aren’t an expensive fix but it’s kind of a pain to have to do that every spring to replace those valves. So those are some simple things that you can do to prevent your valves from cracking and to prevent your system from taking on a whole a lot of damage if an early freeze comes and you’re not ready for it because you haven’t got your sprinklers blown up.
