Hi there, it is Joshua Feinberg from startconsultingbusinesss.com. And I am here to talk with you today about how to start a Consulting Business.
Three tips that can help you develop the right skills and now let’s just start a Consulting Business off the right way. If you are looking to start a Consulting Business and you wonder if you will be expected to know everything that can possibly go wrong with your clients’ problems and potential problems, it is important for you to know that the clients do not expect you to know everything because many people that are thinking about starting their own consulting business or afraid that they need to know anything and everything about. I think it’s like a possibly ever happened in the world, and they are not sure what kind of skills and all is they need to pick up to actually fulfill their clients needs.
But the fact is you do not have to know about absolutely everything. And we are just starting a successful Consulting Business, the notion the you even be able to know everything, when it comes to technologies it is kind of unrealistic. So, we are going to look at three key steps that can help you learn which scales and what kind of knowledge you need to have to start a Consulting Business the right way.
First, understand the balance between technical skills and people skills. In order to successfully start a Consulting Business, you need to be really well organized and friendly and someone that enjoys helping other people. So, focus on being resourceful and not just a technical genius.
When you try to hard to be a technical genius as you build your client base, you can actually hold yourself back. Consulting is a lot more about communicating with people and building real relationships. So, if you have strong technical skills, but you need some help working a room. You can get better at socializing and networking and smooching and building up your contacts over time. Along the same ways if you have skills gaps and your IT is closer to your technical skills of course you can partner with others to bring on to your team, you can hire contractors or now as your company grows you may have want to consider hiring stuff. So, make sure that you understand the balance between technical skills and people skills.
Second, find out if you have the right skills. How do you know if you have the right technical skills and business skills to start a Consulting Business? First of all, do not let luck of IT certifications hold you back. Advance technical certifications are not important to the average none technical small business sounder a manager. Notice I said advance technical certifications; you can do well with out having to sell to companies that have in house IT director. Focus on your ability to build strong relationships and solve real business problems with sophisticated IT solutions.
And again, we are talking about how advance technical certification maybe unnecessary. That is sad for non-technical small business owners and managers. Many of them more appreciate the piece of mind of you having some certifications. But do no expect them to be expert at understanding the difference between intermediate and beginner level certification versus more advanced certification. In other words, they won’t know the difference between whether you had to take one or two tests or a test. In other words, they can’t differentiate necessarily between an MCP or an MCSC or what a CCIE means or CCNA or any of that stuff. So, make sure that you focus on your ability to build strong relationships and solve real business problems with sophisticated IT solutions that you recommend that you just find without rocking up a lot of certifications that are probably be overkill when it comes to working with most small business that do not have an inhouse IT persons. So, make sure that you find out if you have the right skills and do not over obsess over lack of advanced certifications.
Third, remember that small business owners want total business solutions and complete accountability, the back stops here. Typical small business owners and managers especially those that are not technical are not looking for just credentials or technical skills. Most of them will actually value your track record a lot more being able to bring in testimonials and key studies and reference status.
Listen, they are buying you and your business expertise, and you are both going to solve their technology problems using your knowledge and skills. They are buying your comprehensive business solutions and they are buying the piece of mind on a security of working with the consulting business that knows how to work with other company’s like there. So remember that small business owners want total business solutions and complete accountability from you.
