Starting Solid Food

Host: When would you recommend we start solid foods? Maria Monteverde: I think six months, within your recommendation. Host: It can be six, four to six and I agree with you. It would be ideal if we can go six but the pressure out there from the neighbor of getting the kid into whatever it is, it's not all the surprise but why should you wait for the kid to be ready grab for finger food is probably what mother nature wants, is that true? Maria Monteverde: Yeah. Host: What order would you start? What would be the first thing that you would offer the kid? Maria Monteverde: I will start with rice cereal and rice cereal because it is a lower allergy food for reaction. It is basically and also because it helps get the child some iron that they are running out of. Host: It's an iron fortified cereal. Maria Monteverde: Iron fortified cereal. After that, typically we would start with fruits or vegetables. The recommendation tend to be as more of the yellow or orange ones again because they are less allergenic and also you want to start with one new food every two to three days just to prevent any reaction. Host: So to keep you going good once a week so you don't get any kind of that and also you will have to start with food that have less of sugar; since children get used to that sugar highs, is that true? Maria Monteverde: Yes, I would recommend starting with vegetables before we start with fruits. Host: As first days of practice we still get fruits for us and other times we used get the vegetables of the fruit and the reason that was that sugar high will work up the kids getting. Maria Monteverde: The sugar high and also for anyone, I mean, anyone would rather have something sweet than something vegetably. So you don't want to start that right away because some kids we see that they will only eat the sweet and it's hard to encourage the vegetables afterwards.
