Storytelling in Hilo with Sig Zane
The image in our along our shirts and our dresses really are our reflection of our environment. All of these plants are the actually stories of Hawaii. One of the things that I like to do with my plant designs is take the viewer or the wary into the forest. I want them to become part of the forest. The Lehua blossoms are manifestation of Pelect, the Lehua represents fire, represents the volcano. Velico, represent new Growth. Yamau fern represents unfolding of the story. Hashinen Hawaii has no boundaries, the Pelect wide open because we have so much of those colors in our environment.
We are located in down town Hilo right on the bay amongst of all the little shop. Hilo is one of my most favorite places in the world. It is kind a like of stocking time, it has retained its culture, it has got great people. One of my favorite place is Wilson’s by the bay and they make the best shaped ice but if they surf usually they are not here. Let us see, see it is closed that must mean that the surf is up.
I have still hand cut every design, it is fun to apply all of that knowledge above the ocean, about the forest, about the Hilo in my work. When you have a shirt of mine maybe you will be wearing that little story, that little tradition with you and hopefully you will be able to tell that story to someone else and then that story lives on.
