Male: Lots of people say that girls, they carry their world in their handbag. You got everything in there you need. All I need to borrow though, if you got one lipstick? You got a lipstick? Can I borrow a lipstick?
Female: Yes.
Male: Okay, hold both hands out like this—left or right hand?
Female: Right hand.
Male: Now what I want you to do then, put your right hand behind your back, okay. Make your left hand into a fist, I am going to put a little mark on the back of your hand. Can you see that there? That is great. Now, I will hang on to this just for a second, watch the lipstick there, if I rub like this, when I rub the lipstick, it rubs into your hand. And it is really strange because it looks like it is disappearing, yes?
Female: Okay.
Male: It is not disappearing, it is going, right through, look.
Female: Oh my god, that is really weird.
Male: This is the explanation for lipstick voodoo. Obviously to do the trick, you are going to need to borrow a lipstick. Do not do it with your own lipstick because it is not going to look good. It needs to be impromptu. The trick will be stronger if you use the spectator’s own lipstick. Obviously I have been joined by Rose and she is already setup with her lipstick so, I borrow the lipstick of Rose, now, you need to create a moment of misdirection.
Now I misdirect the spectator by asking them, have they got any other makeup, what else do they got in their bag.
You will see that I am making some sort of comment to make them look away. When they look away, all you do is literally take the top of the lipstick casually, extend the central part of the lipstick and smear a bit onto you r first finger and then close it up again. When you finish with the spectator and they have comments and what else they have got in their bag or they have said if they have got any other makeup, you say, oh, that is fine, we will just use the lipstick.
You then ask them to hold out their both hands and show them how you need them their hands like so. And at this point, you are making an excuse, you make a very casual excuse to touch their hand with your first finger that is setup with the lipstick. You say, just needs to be a bit higher and as you raise their hands higher, the first finger comes into contact with the central part of their palm. So if you could just turn that way Rose, I know it is difficult but, as you raise it up, you smear that into the center of the palm and the lipstick is transferred from the first finger onto the palm.
The next part of the routine, it seems like a free choice, it is not free choice. You are going to have to use their left hand which in on your right. But you make it seem like this is a free choice. You ask them if they are right handed or left handed. If they say they are right handed, you say, okay, put your right hand behind your back. If they say they are left handed, you say, okay, we will use the left hand, put your right hand behind your back, it is kind of like, your choice at the end of the day.
So we will do that, right now Rose, are you right handed or left handed.
Rosie: Right handed.
Male: You are right handed. Okay, put your right hand behind your back. Now, you are going to ask them to close their hand, it is important that they do not turn their hand over at this point. So I always take their wrist like so and say please, close your hand into a fist.
You then take the lipstick and sometimes it is quite cute to actually make out you are having problem opening it. Because this implies that you have not opened the lipstick already, it is just a little subtle to you that you might want to try to enhance the effect. You open up the lipstick, bring the central part to the top and on the center of their fist, you make a little circular mark and obviously at this point, they are wondering, what you are going to do, this is going to be very, very strange indeed, they are expecting to see something really cool and they will.
Because you rubbed the lipstick into their hand and you explained that it looks like it is disappearing, it looks like it is disappearing but it is not disappearing, you look them in the eyes and you say, it is going right through.
Now when you say this, they are a little bit confused, what does he mean, it is going through or you are just rubbing it off. Say no, it is going right through.
Open your hand and you turn your hand over and gesture, the spectator will follow suit, turn over and when they see the lipstick mark on the center of the palm, they will absolutely freak.
Try it for yourself with anybody who has got a lipstick and you will have fun with lipstick voodoo.
