Kathy Reily: Hello! I am Kathy Reily, coordinator of the Diabetes Program at Prince William Hospital in Manassas, Virginia. Now, I would like to talk to you a little bit about diabetes lifestyles changes and problem solving.

Male Speaker: How does stress affect blood sugar?

Kathy Reily: Stress will elevate blood sugar and that can be emotional stress or physical stress. Emotional stress is found in our everyday life. We often have it with work, we have it with family, we have financial problems and that kind of stress is going to raise blood sugar. Physical stress also raises blood sugar. Physical stress is illness, infection when we get sick.

Both types of stresses force more sugar out of the liver and then there is extra sugar circulating. There is insufficient insulin to handle this extra glucose and therefore the blood sugar becomes elevated.
