Stress in the Workplace

Ken: Hi! My name is Ken, I am from Los Angeles. My work is stressing and demanding and sometimes I experience some anxiety attack at work. I wonder if there is any relaxation exercise or breathing exercise I can usually do at work?

Dr. Barbara Rothbaum: Ken, I am sorry to hear that you're having such difficulties at work, but yes, there are things that you can do that can help. I would recommend for example, when you're at work, checking in with yourself, checking in with your body every hour on the hour and making sure you're not too tensed, making sure you're shoulders are lower, making sure you're not clenching your jaw, making sure your posture is okay and getting rid of any extra tension you can. I would also watch your breathing; maybe take a few good cleansing breaths when you're doing that.

Also pay attention to how you're thinking about things at work. I suspect you might be putting extra pressure on yourself and there would be ways to think about work differently that might make it easier for you.
