This is Jeremy Lafreniere with Capital Jiu Jitsu, and we are now going to get into the striking range of combat. I am here with Stuart. As I begin to close the distance, he stands up in base. Now, he is standing and I am standing, I haven't continued closing the distance, he hasn't closed the distance on me. That space means we are in striking range of combat. If I am in a striking range of combat with Stuart, then we can utilize some basic strikes, primarily the Jab and the Cross Strike to begin to punish or injure our opponent. The Jab Strike is delivered like this; notice how the hands are up in front of the face, the elbows are down protecting the body. The jab strike is the strike that's led with the lead shoulder. When he throws that strike, yes, he throws it straight, he pivots slightly on his foot and it's the two knuckles here that actually make contact with the opponent's body. When he throws a strike he pulls it back just as fast as he throws it.
So if we are here in the striking range of combat, Stuart can then utilize the jab strike. Good. He can also utilize the Cross, also called a Straight. Now, in the cross strike, you will notice that, that's the power hand, and its also delivered with the power shoulder, through the hips and through the foot, which means he needs to begin that movement with the foot. The foot is what generates the beginning of that power travels through the hip, out the shoulder, and through the hand. It's also a straight punch. So, from here, Stuart is going to demonstrate that Cross - also, these two knuckles are whats making contact with the opponent. Alright, you can see, as he is moving, the foot turns, the hip moves out the shoulder and through the knuckles. He brings that fist back as fast as he throws it out. I want to mention one more time; the hands are up protecting the face, the elbows are down against the body, he is stepping with his lead foot slightly forward, and his back foot is at a forty-five degree angle. Alright, that's it for this discussion.
