Rob Schumann: In this fifth segment, we will be looking at a little bit more difficult application for this core progression. We will be using ninths in the chords and this will get us a little bit more melodic possibility with what we are playing. We will start with the same E minor and we will go up and down it and then apply the ninth which is on the seventh fret on the second string. So in this case I will be using my second finger on the seventh fret on the second string; hammering on to the eight; pulling back off to the seventh; pulling off to the fifth. Then pulling off the eight to the fifth once again and going back down through the arpeggio.
I will do that twice, then when I get to the A minor I will do the same thing the first time. The second time I have got find a way to get that B major chord, so I can use some passing tones on the first string and I can actually pull these off to open E since I am over an A minor chord and E is in A minor chord. So I will pull the ninth off to the open string and the tenth off to the open string so that will look like this. Then I am ready to hit the B major. We can descend this one instead of ascending it like we usually start with. So I will start by going down the B major and then this time I can add a fourth to the chord.
Here I am on the third of the chord, the D# on the eleventh fret, I can slur on to the or hammer-on to the twelfth fret to add a fourth, so that it look like this. So I am pulling off of eleven; hammering on and pulling off of twelfth and then going back to eleven. One more time. Then I am ready for my C diminish chord and I am doing a little pattern there, just to make it interesting I am going up the chord, then pulling off then do it again and then hitting the eleventh fret on the third string; going back up to the first string then pulling off on the third string and pulling off on the first string. So all the way through that progression it will look like this. So good luck with that using metronome and start slowly.
Alex Lifeson: Hi! this is Alex Lifeson of Rush and today we are going to work on the band. It starts at the F-Sharp which is the second fret on the high E string and it's...
