Since like I am always buying new shoes for my kids, they outgrow them so fast. Well I was searching for some options to help us reduce our eco-footprint, and I found a number of solutions.
I'll start with the most economical. Payless has a new line of eco-friendly shoes under the name Zoe & Zac. These shoes are made from organic cotton, hemp, jute, recycled rubber, and even water-based glues. The dyes are metal-free, and the elastic in some of the shoes are even made from recycled plastic water bottles. But best part is that every pair is less than $30.
If you want to spend a little more, Nike has a new eco-friendly shoe line called Considered Design. They make their shoes with eco-friendly materials like organic cotton and cork.
The company hopes to have all of their shoes made under these standards by 20-11. Nike also has a Reuse-A-Shoe and Nike Grind programs, where you can take your old shoes to certain drop-off locations or send them in. They'll be ground up and turned into something new, like an indoor basketball court.
Keds are also popular for kids. They now have a new green line called the Green Label. Besides being made with 100% organic cotton, no toxic inks or dyes are used, and they are manufactured with recycled rubber, or check out a brand name known as Simple Shoes.
They are committed to finding more sustainable ways to make shoes. They use everything from recycled inner tubes to bamboo to make their shoes, and they also have shoes to fit every foot and many of them are very affordably priced.
Finally, if there is a pair of shoes that they love but they worn them out, but they still fit, get them resoled. It's an inexpensive fix to make more use out of what you already have in the closet.
